VERY smooth transition from Rodrigo y Gabriela, it was like the song just continued right into this.

Love this song, brings lots of memories, not happy ones but still ....

Another perspective.   Never heard this song before and wow, just wow!  Love Cash and now I have a new door to open about this song and its creator. RP is good. Live and learn.

The haters seem to be a little too loud recently here, which is not reflected in the average rating. My two cents: this is a brilliant cover, truly fantastic. Transcends the original, which is also brilliant.

Agree with the posts that recognize this as a brilliant interpretation, perhaps better than the original, and the video if you haven't seen it is also excellent.  If you don't know or like Johnny it may not strike you as much but those of us who understand and appreciate his place in the pantheon find the relationship of the song lyrics, performance, and visuals to his personal life to be sublime.

I'm having some work done in my house so it is pretty noisy.  Turns out Bill just said, "...especially not followed up by Johnny Cash."

I thought I heard "...especially not followed up by John Tesh."  I immediately ran to the window so I wouldn't miss the Four Horsemen.  What a relief to discover it was only an aural misunderstanding.

Never was a cover so much more overplayed than the original.

Except the damn Gary Jules cover of Mad World.

What is it about overexposure that makes one dislike something one used to like? :(

Overexposure can ruin a great song quickly.
So an 8 soon becomes a 5 or less.............IMHO.

man is that ever true!  T.R. couldn't have a more loyal fan base than the one that exists in our household... But....the original version is "soft" and somewhat overproduced...although  we'ed never know that unless Cash did his rendition..so raw and stark with a haunting edge and that "impending doom" overtone. kinda erie (but irresistable) listening to it in retrospect.

Awesome song. I wish the recording was a little better as the song clips during the climax. Too bad as a lot of the American stuff by Cash sounds really great.

The last few records Cash released, and all produced by Rick Rubin, completely immortalized this great artist.  This cut is wonderful and helps make the point.

What makes a great cover.

Start with a great song.

Add a brilliant re-interpretation that is consistent with the covering artist.

One of the fastest times I ever downloaded a song from iTunes was when The Man Comes Around was played over the closing credits of the final episode of Generation Kill, an HBO series. Credits had been rolling no more than 60 seconds — on a song I was hearing for just the first time — and I had completed the circuit from TV to ear to iTunes to iPod and then back to my ears. And I play Man Comes Around frequently. What a great and chilling closing line: And Hell Followed With Him.
Ever since, though I never knew much about Johnny, I always listen. A lot more to him then Ring of Fire A Boy Named Sue.
