it seemed really deep at the time (to a 16-year old) ....... now..... well there are other songs that cover the theme better, but a good song nonetheless (although I've heard it to death)

I'd like to feel nostalgia for this song but as I hear it 3 times a week I can only feel extremely weary of it{#Rolleyes}

Not my favorite Police song, but a great one.  And young people please take note of the drums!  This is QUALITY.......quirky,
spontaneous, riffing on rhythm.  Real talent!  Not like the electronic beat dance crap.

and btw.......bicycle mechanics sure can understand quality.
Check out Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance......

I deduct 9 levels for the tooooooooooo-many times I heard it on FM. Besides, Sting comes close to the record of how many times a singer can repeat something in a song. Sending out a make it stop.

Though I like this album, this hasn't aged well. Like a fine aged cheese that needed refrigeration, but wasn't so lucky. Yikes!

I always thought it was an amusing pronunciation.  It sounds like he was putting on a Middle Eastern or Indian accent instead of his usual attempts at a Caribbean one.

Jokes aside, you gotta admit these are brilliant lyrics:

Walked out this morning
Don't believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on a shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
A hundred billion castaways
Lookin' for a home

I think you missed a few repetitions...  I don't know how someone could sing the same 4 words so many times without wanting to hang themselves with a guitar string.

It's all in the timing.

Graduated high school and went to college in '79.

Met my future wife freshman year.

Seemed they were always playing The Police at the school cafeteria.

Great memories...

My band used to play this song, or try to.  It's deceptively difficult. Those first three notes on the guitar are a tough spread of the fingers.

I can't help it...I just love the Police.  They were such a big part of my teens.  I had backstage passes to a bunch of their shows, and I even saw them at an outdoor show at Hollywood Park (during an 8500 mile trip by car around the US with a friend).  Sting watched me play Centipede at that show, and it didn't occur to me until much later that he probably wanted me to get off of the game so he could play.  I was young and oblivious.  Fun, fun days those...
