Old man lying by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by
Blue moon's sinkin from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky
Cold wind nippin down the valley at dawn
And the morning paper flies
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes
Don't let it bring you down,
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hands
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand
Red lights flashing through the window in the rain
Can you hear the sirens moan
White cain lying in the gutter in the lane
And you're walking home alone
Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
Dont let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
Old man lying by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by
Blue moon's sinkin from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky
Cold wind nippin down the valley at dawn
And the morning paper flies
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes
Dont let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
And you will come around
Dont let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find some one who's turning
And you will come around
| sirdroseph (Yes) | Posted: May 01, 2013 - 04:56 Am I the only one who cannot stand Annie Lennox's music?? All of her music is offensive to my ears, never got it.... |
| bb_matt (Hampshire, England) | Posted: May 01, 2013 - 04:55 A different take and I like it. |
| bodyschool | Posted: Feb 27, 2013 - 15:07 Is there a little Big Sky Country (Chris Whitley) synth thing in here? or my imagination. |

| ckcotton (Adding snarky comments since 2007) | Posted: Feb 27, 2013 - 14:50 WTF?! Stick to your own stuff..... this is awefull and I can't "unhear" it |
| ncollingridge | Posted: Jan 27, 2013 - 07:41 Neil Young minus the edge and angst. Not an improvement in my view. YMMV |
| chism2 (Suffolk, England, UK) | Posted: Dec 26, 2012 - 23:20 Why? |

| MiracleDrug (Earth) | Posted: Aug 23, 2012 - 05:36 yet another fine example if Neil's songwriting prowess... and his UTTER INABILITY to sing... ever notice that ANYONE who can stay on pitch sounds better than Neil on HIS songs...? ![]() |
| schayler (Denver) | Posted: Aug 23, 2012 - 05:33 Love this cover. Brilliantly used in American Beauty. Makes me think of the movie every time I hear it. |

She's one of the few female voices I respect and actually enjoy listening to in pop/rock/alternative music. Most others seem to have some sort of weirdly affected tonal quality or are only capable of mastering one or two interval jumps/vocal tricks. Her voice is capable of some of these 'tricks' due to her age. The body affects a lot of changes as the years pass and some voices get much better with age. As a vocal student and passionate singer, at 42 I can do things with my voice a female vocalist in her 20s could not do. I can't wait to hear what I sound like in 20 years :) |

| dew34 (United States) | Posted: Apr 18, 2012 - 19:39 Neil Young Is A Hero of mine so when someone covers his stuff I tend to be skeptical. This Is a fine version from the earthy cooing of an excellent singtress! |

Love her (and her voice) to the point of devotion, but singing a Neil Young tune!!!! Like, maybe, Peter Gabriel singing Johnny Cash? Or like, maybe, Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails? Oh wait - that happened! I actually like this version as much as Neil's...and I usually like the originals waaaay more than the covers. Good job, Ms Lennox. |
| seven7 (Glass City Ohio) | Posted: Feb 15, 2012 - 08:31 Cool version. |
| siandbeth (Santa Cruz California) | Posted: Feb 15, 2012 - 08:28 I like this. I especially like the fact that Annie's voice does not need to be auto tuned. |
| Stingray (NWO reloaded) | Posted: Jan 14, 2012 - 14:09 Sorry, Annie - but this is bull! |
| aspicer (Chicago, IL) | Posted: Jan 14, 2012 - 14:07 Amazing version - a nice "yin" to the "yang".... |
| Carl (The Summit City) | Posted: Dec 13, 2011 - 20:03 Annie Lennox has a perfect voice for this song, I think. |
| Baketown (Maryland) | Posted: Oct 11, 2011 - 13:46 A Nice Version! |

| Carl (The Summit City) | Posted: Jul 09, 2011 - 09:47 Although the album info says, "American Beauty Soundtrack," it's really from an iTunes "American Beauty soundtrack" user playlist that includes "Songs that were or should have been used in the movie." I have the real American Beauty soundtrack CD, and this isn't on it (unfortunately because I like it pretty well). |
| von_Hayek (Land of the early birds) | Posted: May 07, 2011 - 03:45 That's the way to kill a beautiful song. |

| Detlaps (Littlerock, too close to Los Angeles) | Posted: Feb 01, 2011 - 17:17 I love Annie. But she's doing neither herself nor Neil Young justice here. |
| lmic (Harmless Little Bunny) | Posted: Feb 01, 2011 - 17:17 Nice turn, Annie! |
| Rafter101 (Davis, California) | Posted: Jan 01, 2011 - 09:46 For some reason, she seems to miss on this song (beautiful song, but misses.) It's like she lost her sense of soul or timing, and sounds like Annie Lennox signing with Neil Young's brain inside. |
| allenrudd (2219.62 miles east of Paradise) | Posted: Nov 30, 2010 - 18:46 I love Neil. Wouldn't it be something if he could sing like Annie? |
| anotherlistener (outside Bawlmer) | Posted: Sep 28, 2010 - 11:04 This is a very good cover of a great song. (8, original-10) |
| helgigermany (Germany) | Posted: Sep 28, 2010 - 11:00 Wrong artist with very nice song! |
| adamdbenson (IL) | Posted: Sep 28, 2010 - 10:59 Genius lyrics paired with angelic voice - this song wins |

| daedalus (over your hill) | Posted: Jul 26, 2010 - 10:55 The album Medusa was a collection of Annie Lennox's favorite songs written by others. I think she has done more than enough of her own original work to earn the right for some self indulgence. I find it an enduring album that I've never tired of because of the variety of sources she chose. |

| annie_fannie (Iowa) | Posted: Jul 26, 2010 - 10:50 Wow, as soon as this song came on I was immediately transported to the scene of American Beauty where I first heard it. I guess I never realized how impactful it was in the movie until now! |
| Rozsa (Züri Oberland) | Posted: Jun 24, 2010 - 13:55 Definitely makes me want to change channels. And I tend to like both Neil and Annie... |
| brander (Southern California) | Posted: Jun 24, 2010 - 13:53 Generally not a fan of covers, but I really like this one. |
| Gatlinburger | Posted: May 23, 2010 - 18:06 I've never heard another cover of this song. I love Annie Lenox and Neil Young - well, let's not even go there (the man is an icon). The pair just don't seem to fit, but yet the song is a fair attempt at evoking the same feeling. To follow it up w/ Neil's "A Man Needs a Maid" seems to reconcile the oddness of it all. Weird! Then came Shawn Colvin's "This must be the Place." OK, it seems to work... |
| Jelani (Home of the freak, land of the vague) | Posted: May 23, 2010 - 17:56 LOVE her voice. |
| plaice3 | Posted: Feb 17, 2010 - 20:11 transcendent ... |
| dctrpunda (the thin line of here) | Posted: Jan 17, 2010 - 10:30 i've always liked this song and the whole album. NY's original is of course without comparison, but when you've heard it repeatedly since it came out, it's nice to hear a cover that breaths some new life into the piece and allows you to enjoy it again. |
| lemmoth (NYC) | Posted: Jan 17, 2010 - 10:28 A fantastic interpretation of a great song!!! LIke everything else, there are good covers and crap covers, this is one of the best!!!! |
| Manbird (Santa Rosa, CA) | Posted: Jan 17, 2010 - 10:27 Excellent! |
| westslope (BC coast) | Posted: Nov 15, 2009 - 15:00 Love this cover. Also love the original. |

And I tend to like both Neil and Annie...
