It's oké to rate this song as "average", when you're not to familiar with the 80's period.

But when you have lived the 80's to its limits, you must be convinced of the enormous impact of this song, of its album, of its band.

renewing, refreshing, underground to dance : it was really one of the greatest songs of its time !

Just because you may have been young or not "fully developed" when this song came out doesn't mean everyone else was.  It's not a "great opus", but it works.

Those of us who chose to listen to stuff like this back then did so because we had sense enough to reject the MTV tripe that people with "good taste" (like you?) seemed to love so much.

This song comes across as being somewhat transitional; at the point they recorded it, New Order was just past halfway towards shaking off their Joy Division sound-and-feel roots. Blue Monday points the way to what New Order was to ultimately become.
