I don't think he is talking about that era, I think most (and rightfully so) consider the Reckoning to Green era early as well. To me the change from "old" to "new" REM occurred after 1991's Out of Time, they lost me after that.

As they mature as men/women/artists, their passion (along with the time spent on that passion) changes...sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
