My sense of him is indellibly linked to a video I saw of him on the pilot of proposed Jon Brion TV show.  Even at his happiest he seemed such a sad young man.

Don't forget Sufjan. Sadly I liked the O.C. music and all. Does that make me any less of a intelligent/respectable person . . . hmmmm i think not. - maybe a little dorky though.

You don't have to consider music in context but when you compare Elliott Smith to the OC and Laguna Beach you look like a dumbass.

A person doesnt have much control over the physical voice they were given, but he/she does have authority over their words and their intellectual "voice". This guy to me has a young and innocent voice, but the words dont match that image, they are more introspective.

When I think adolescent bands and vapid teens, I think panic! at the disco and the All American Rejects. That crap isnt played here and may it never be.

You're right if...

1. You mean to say that this is more the case with Figure 8 than with any of Elliott Smith's other releases, though if that was your intent, your wording was quite inartful.

2. Your experiences as a 10-13 year old were unlike those of most people.

3. You ignore the lyrics entirely.

I gotta join those thanking RP for being introduced to Elliott Smith. How sad he left so early. But as others stated, in his music he will continue to live on. I am noticing that his songs, like those of other great artists, just improve with repeated listening. Anyhow, sorry I missed him here in Portland.

Yet another great artist that Radio Paradise has turned me onto. Elliot was a great artist who will be greatly missed. And yet a little of him lives in me (and will forever).

Beauty of music. Has a special life than transcends even death. Its only defining factor is memory.
