There's a live version of this on that recent IRS double-disc compilation that's pretty cool. Stipe gives a shout-out during the song to someone named Ingrid. Anybody know who Ingrid is?

Bought this CD (oops, cassette) because Rolling Stone labeled it Album of the Year for 1983. And in 1983-84, I was a freshman in high school.

Yeah, early REM might have shaped me a bit.

Letterman had them back to do a second "untitled" song later too.
The song was later titled So. Central Rain. Great stuff

I've always liked this song. It's one of those that almost annoys with its ability to get stuck in your head for hours.

I don't think I've ever liked it better than hearing it right after that atrocious Cry Cry Cry version of "Fall on Me" though.

Saw em do this in SF when they were nothing. Badgered a friend into going to the show, but he showed late and acted all nonchalant and stuff.

Peter Buck played some guitar with the opening act (I forget who) and then later in the real gig his amp caught on fire.

Out of everything they played, this is the one song I remember. It was different...

Until they left the IRS label, they were the best band in America. How the mighty have fallen.

it doesn't look like a tumbleweed... more like grape vines on steriods (it can grow up to 2 feet a day)

only 3 things that can get rid of it
1. bulldozer
2. a team of goats
3. Roundup Kudzu killer

as a child (growing up in Georgia) I used to look out the car window at all the trees covered in a blanket of kudzu... I always imagined that the trees were giant monsters standing very still waiting for us to past by

Man, Murmer never-ever-ever grows old on me. What a terrific piece of work.
As for kudzu, it grows 1 foot per day. You can watch it grow under an el-cheapo microscope. Not that you'd want to ;-)

Great way to start the day! REM is a band where at any given moment I would have a different answer to the question "What is your favorite REM album?" Some days it's MURMUR, others it RECKONING, or DOCUMENT, or AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, but more often than not it's LIFE'S RICH PAGEANT. Their new stuff is tolerable, but compared to stuff like this, no contest.

Wow, hard to believe this record is 20 years old!

Loved it then, love it now.

You didn't have to understand the words on those early albums (although this was one of the few you could understand), those songs moved you by the spirit of the music alone.
