Why does this song sound like it's tripping over itself?

Although I like the song, I'm not sure it captures New York City. The rhythm of the falling rain? I've been to New York, Bangkok, Reykjavik, Paris and elsewhere. Falling rain sounds the same in every city. A 5 a.m. cab ride? I could take a 5 a.m. cab ride in Cleveland. Manhattan goddess with your Levi's and curls? The women I've known in Manhattan wouldn't go near a pair of Levi's!

New York City is special because of its manic, neurotic grandeur. Although the composer was trying to portray an intimate relationship, I think the lyrics are just too generic to accurately reflect a love affair with a city that is unlike anyplace else.

My two cents.

Moe - New York City
Ryan Adams - New York, New York

Go for Nina Hagen next.

It has more of a Gaelic sound to me, but I do remember Dean Friedman and that song.

Oh,  I love that song!  "I said, 'HI!'  She said, 'Yeah, I guess I am.'"  I actually have that album. "We made love to bombs bursting in Airrrrrrr-iel..."   I hear some similarities here (I also, here, some similarities hear.) Thanks for the reminder.  I have GOT to get my turntable hooked up - so much great music (Kevin Ayers' "Yes, We Have No Mañanas
springs to mind.)  {#Cheers}

Ooooh - been a LONG time since I've heard Johnny Clegg - "Scatterlings" has always been one of my favorite songs by him, although I also really love "Asimbonanga" and "Take My Heart Away" (the latter is what compelled me to purchase the "Shadow Man" cassette, and I haven't gotten it on CD yet! Dang me....)

And, now that we're on the subject, why do we NOT have any Johnny Clegg and Savuka playing? "Scatterlings" is on the playlist, but there are so many other wonderful songs by him. If I had the CD, I'd convert to MP3 and upload a few things...

Um, sorry, ick - I sorta bogarted your post... *blushing*

Ditto on the JC and Savuka.  Let's get some of that going!

I don't care if it captures NYC or not - it captures a happy groove for me, and I really like it. Even now, when it's dark and winter is looming on the horizon. Yeah, bring it on, winter - I gots me some Moe. {#Dancingbanana}{#Music}

Never listened to these guys, even though I was a big fan of some of the 90s jam band scene. The guitar in this is pretty cool though.

I'm hearing this too, but I assumed it was an african guitarist of some stripe... all but the guitar part is relatively average, but the guitar method shimmers.

Kinda what I thought. Not that I dislike this song, it's just the bumper stickers were obscure enough to make me think it would be a bit less, I dunno, pop-ish?
