Congo Square
Sonny Landreth, Mel Melton, Dave Ranson
might be superstition but some kind of somethin'
goin' on down there
it might be superstition but some kind of somethin'
goin' on down there
it's an old time tradition when they play their
drums at night in Congo Square
you can hear 'em in the distance
and the old folks up the bayou say a prayer
you can hear 'em in the distance
and the old folks up the bayou say a prayer
that's when the voodoo people gather
and they play their drums at night in Congo Square
... voodoo people
my eyes were not believin'
what I seen there but I could not turn away
my eyes were not believin'
what I seen there but I could not turn away
they had that mojo in motion
and I seen 'em dance in trance with that snake
... snake dance
it might be superstition
but when I hear 'em in the night I say a prayer
yeah it might be superstition
but when I hear 'em in the night I say a prayer
because I respects tradition
like the kind they carry on in Congo Square
... Congo Square

| Ericocean (Cumberland, Maryland) | Posted: Nov 03, 2012 - 09:27 He's good. If I remember correctly, I saw him at the Boathouse in Norfolk Va with John Hiatt as a member of the Goners (before a hurricane blew it down). I think he plays with Jimmy Buffett too. |

| Hannio (Austin, TX) | Posted: Nov 21, 2011 - 09:07 I'm usually a big fan of kitty-torture guitar playing, but there is something about the tone of Landreth's guitar I just don't care for. |
| jt1 | Posted: Nov 21, 2011 - 09:07 This song proves that Einstein was right about time being relative. For the lovers of the music, the time until it ends passes far too quickly, and for anyone not enjoying it this will seem like a rough demonstration of eternity. ...good value if you select it on a jukebox though! |

| Cynaera (In a hammock under my own vine and fig tree.) | Posted: Oct 20, 2011 - 19:03 Listening to this song after learning of Muammar Quaddafi's death just makes me realize, more than ever, that things are no longer the status quo. The balance is shifting, and I'm a little bit afraid of what will happen. I thought we had a voice, but all these things have taken place without my contribution. |

| Misterfixit (Nashville) | Posted: Jul 18, 2011 - 09:38 Sonny has done several incantations of this old song and they are all absolutely rocking! The best Congo Square I've ever heard was played by the Grambling university Marching Band some 20 years ago ... Big Chief of The Congo Nation, Senior lives on .... |

| paulmack (the hissing swamps) | Posted: Apr 14, 2011 - 13:08 Had a Sonny Landreth CD years ago that I never really liked. This song makes me wonder why the hell I didn't, though. To me, his guitar is such a nice combination of occasional crazy abandon with mostly veiled - but almost ominously well-coiled - restraint. Love it. The drumming (except the solo - thankfully short in my opinion) expertly and tastefully punches away beautifully in the background. The CD? Oh, yeah, it was called "South of I-10" and, like I said, I wish I had it back to listen to now. Not only that, it had a studio version of this song on it. Evidently I am an idiot. Clearly, however, this is purely opinion - not to mention one not shared by everyone below - and that's ok. |

| (former member) (Phoenixville, PA) | Posted: Jan 10, 2011 - 10:27 I have his CD version of this and hit replay on the Shuffle when I'm running and it comes on. When I heard the first few bars of this version I knew I knew it but it wasn't the same and I'm enjoying this as well. |
| ri_shelton (A few clicks up the river) | Posted: Dec 30, 2010 - 12:09 Huh. I like this version better than the one I heard yesterday, and the one the day before. I guess winter break becomes my opportunity to sample the entire RP playlist. |

One of a very short list of beefs that I have with the programming choices made here is that music like this, which I'll loosely term jam music, is underrepresented. This tune is a testament to monumental chops and a groove a mile deep, and in my view RP could use a lot more of this and a lot less Radiohead. "and in my view RP could use a lot more of this and a lot less Radiohead.' Or reggae :-( |
