while you douchebag hipsters go and dis a musician who supposidly "totally rips off the talking heads" and "has such an annoying voice"

what do you want from music? for it to be all harmonized by an eq or for all singers to be professionally taught so they can then sing in a b-shop quartet?

annoying is subjective.. whiny but in a self depreciating way... borrows tom yorke's voice a tad..

as for it ripping of talking heads..

do you really think any good albums could be put out if it werent for influence?

like yes i agree they borrow 'elements' but ripping off is what elastica did to the stranglers..

please provide exact rip offs in this case.. or take your 'nobody understands me' attitude and go fuck off..

There was a SNL skit (I think it might have been a Christmas one) with Horatio, Jimmy Falon, and probably a few others where they had a mini Casio keyboard that they used to play a few notes while they sang an annoying song.

This song reminds me of that skit for many, many reasons...

EXACTLY. I knew somebody else had to hear this too. Got to change for 3 minutes, maybe LRC.

Sounds about right. Wish he'd taken some novocaine for the soul instead. Or maybe I should.

While reading the derivative comments I found this lyric to be nicely timed:

"You look like David Bowie. You've got nothing new to tell me."

Don't condemn these guys until you give the record a full spin. They will grow on you pretty quickly.

This is mostly true... the album is actually OK once you get past the "this is a rip off of Talking Heads" phase...

I'm just wondering at this point in our music evolution, or devolution as some might argue, how a band can not be derivative to some degree. Everyone is so quick to dismiss a band for sounding like any previous band in the history of music. Hell, saying that sounds like the Beatles or Velvet Underground covers 90 percent of current rock/pop. You don't have to like a band, but dismissing on grounds of similarity to someone before is rather goofy don't you think.

I agree with your statement - everything's inspired by something else to some degree. But this guy sounds like he's TRYING to sound like David Byrne.

Nice song of a great album. Really - great stuff.
But surely not everybodys cup of coffee.
Anyways - I love it. (well, not the best song of the album though ...)

Dilemma: When new bands pay homage to old favorite bands, do they get a high score for sounding so good, or a low score for being so derivative?

I always think it's a bit pathetic when people knowingly take advantage of the fact that they sound almost exactly like someone else who is already famous... sorry. Who needs yet another imitator. Been there, done that. Try doing something original.

CYHSY easily makes my top 10 for 2006. This is truly a fantastic record of compelling power pop. It's easy to think this song evokes David Byrne (not a bad thing), but he sounds less like him on the other tracks. Highly recommend "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away," "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth," and "Details of the War."

OK, first, it's understood to be pretty strange that someone who's OK with Neil Young and Smashing Pumpkins vocals to say the following.....this guys voice is not unique, or even Byrne-like, it's just annoying.

Yes, another "grows on ya" song. I've gone from 2 to 7 in a short time.

Actually, I gave it a 7 (rather than a 5, I guess) to piss off the cranks who get so flabbergasted over a song.

Catchy little number. I wouldn't say it's as inventive as Byrne's music. Still, I can see where comparisons might be drawn.

You have got to be kidding. What the hell do you think Clear Channel does? If you base playlists on what a mass audience likes (aka "is familiar with"), you get Clear Channel.

There's never been any pretense here that the playlist is based on ANYTHING other than whether or not Bill and Rebecca like a song. Apparently enough of us like the resulting sound to make it all work. . . .
