A true classic. Everything in its place -- meaning this doesn't belong in any worship service of any true church.

Hey Lazarus,
The Pope called.  Yeah, the new guy.  You know how he's trying to cultivate the common touch and all.
Well, thing is he's heard of you!  Read about you in some old book.  Bottom line is, he's offering you sainthood.  Only thing is, you'd have to convert, unless you are already Catholic.
What should I tell him?

I hear this song ~3-4 times a year. It's tied to a bunch of really good memories and to a wonderful place and time for me. Always a welcome "old friend" of a song, in other words. I guard these memories carefully. They may get me through times of no joy and bitter existence. Music has been one of the most consistent positive forces in my life, and I hope it always will be. But that's my trip, not yours. {#Daisy}

Hey toterola, thanks for the feedback! I def have songs that connect me to good memories too. Those are to be welcomed, for sure. And I know what you mean about the influence of music on mood. On those days when things seem bleak or I'm bored and frustrated with something in my life, music can make a huge difference. I can go from feeling overwhelmed and hopeless to feeling (mostly) capable and full of energy to tackle whatever comes my way.

To me, some songs that make me feel upbeat and happy would include (in no particular order), Talking Heads - Nothing but Flowers or Psycho Killer, Elvis Costello - Pump It Up or Radio Radio, Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground, Pink Floyd - Fearless, Iggy Pop - Lust For Life.

And if I'm in feeling kinda pissed off at the world, then I really like to listen to something like Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man, Rage Against The Machine - Pistol Grip Pump, or The Pretenders -The Adulteress or Up The Neck.

As I'm typing these down, I realize the little sample I gave barely scratches the surface. (And I do like "new" music as well. I just noticed how old some of those are, but I guess I went down that road because we started off talking about music with "memories" like the P Gabriel song).

OK... enough rambling from me... {#Yes}

Oh... and yep, there are other stations around, though maybe none as well-rounded as RP. And there's always the PSD button.
Thanks again for your comment!

I don't know how to rate songs like this. It's a good song. At some points in my life I would have said it was a great song. I might have given it an 8 or 9 at one time. But I've heard it soooo many times and it hasn't held up (to my ears) as well as many other songs that have been around the block. There ARE some that I can still get excited about even if I've heard them 846 times. But not this one. It had WAY too much airplay. So, what's the number for an old song you used to like and it isn't BAD, it's just tired to your ears?
(And yes, I'd love to hear other listener's ideas on this, if anyone feels so inclined.)

I'm not really into this kind of music, but as I listen to his songs, I get more sympathetic with it.

Gabriel was the essence of what Genesis used to be, and even after he's left both he and Genesis managed to keep their successes. Even though I can't stand post-Gabriel Genesis, I can only respect people. Thanks for your years of contribution.

Nice...  Saw the " So - Front to Back" show in San Jose last night.  Still an awesome album from first to last note.
I did think that the first part of the show including an acoustic version of "Shock the Monkey" and a cross cut through the other parts of his catalog was the best section of the show.
His voice is still good.  There was no crowd surfing like when I first saw him in '82...

Overplayed. Loved how it broke barriers when it was new. Now, its not so new sounding. I guess PG suffers from success... im old and have heard this to death. I don't get the energy from this song anymore... pity.
