Sounded like a struggling wedding or prom band - that being said, I did enjoy it.

So you have a problem with Ed's voice.  Think it might only work when in a concert setting.  Ok.

Couldn't disagree more.  He has a wonderful, evocative and unique style.

Now I also appreciate sitting around the house on Saturday listening to Dylan, Waits, Young and Costello as well as say Bowie, Mercury and McCartney to name three almost universally agreed great singers.

So Ed ain't your thing.  I love him.

I love all of those singers you named as well, Eddie Vedder still sucks balls.

Well, OK maybe "Un bel dì vedremo".)
Eddie Vedder delivers the tortured voice of lost love
perfectly and makes this song a rock 'n' roll classic!

This song sort of embodies a lot of what is so right and so wrong about PJ. Well-crafted and strong through most of its run but then loses in the end to Veder's yodellings. Maybe in a throbbing sea of humanity, flogged by powerful axwork through a long night, those animal howlings might transport you to another plane; listening around the house on a Saturday morning, you hit mute.  I think the raters before me had it about dead on, based on a better than pretty good through much of its run, but no better than a 6.1 due to the mute button at the end. So, not a PJ-hater, but more of a lover-hater. Maybe we could add letters to the ratings. I give it a 6.L-H.

I think the Pearl Jam haters should give them some credit. They have been around for a while. They survived the Seattle grunge scene ( unlike so many others)  and they have stuck true to what the do. I like them. They have written some great songs OK, P.J. haters bring it on .

I never said he "couldn't sing" so your premise is wrong.  I said I don't like his voice.

But to answer your question, I like just about everyone on your list.

Yes, with the Band Pearl Jam and Mr. Edward Louis Severson III "Jerome Turner"  is a dilemma, can go thus of the very good one to thus-thus, until the bad; good performance in this ocasion.

My dislike doesn't come from his singing ability. He can indeed hit the notes, his pitch seems to be average for a rock singer, no argument there.

It's his TONE. That affected grunge voice that was responsible for ruining so much of 90's music.

That, and the billy goat vibrato, which I always dislike... see Stevie Nicks.

I second both comments, particularly the one about Stevie Nicks. Billy goat vibrato sums it up perfectly.

You are forgetting that PJ was one of the first 90's grunge groups to make their appearance, alongside Nirvana, as we all know, and that many, many singers adopted Ed's vocal style as their own. If you were talking about Scott Stapp (or Sap depending on your point of view) I would agree with your "affected" comment, but you can't fault Ed for his original style and tone. When other singers borrow/copy another's style for which the person they're borrowing from has had fame and success, in an attempt to cash in, THEN it's "affected." And of course Ed had his own "influences" that can be heard in his style, but so the Beatles had Elvis (as well as many others), it just goes with the territory. (And that "vibrato" is properly referred to as "tremolo" even in classical music)

Referring to previous comment "billy goat vibrato"....what up with that? While I think the comment is funny and clever it is quite off the mark. A lot of us seem to love Eddie's strong and powerful voice, vibrato included.
