Townsend and Daltry will be headed out on tour doing this entire album. I saw Daltry solo doing Tommy and it was really good. Not the same as seeing the who but he had a good band with him.

Casey, thank you for your comment.  I did mean it when i said "no disrespect intended".  I don't propose that ALL women don't enjoy artists such as the Who, but it's been my experience that the band has a largly male following as it's core audience.  Or did.  The group is no more in my eyes, but there is no denying that they were a powerful force that resonated strongly with their audience.  I guess I just wanted to understand the original poster's great dislike of the band a little better.

Pretentious - no doubt.  Overblown - certainly.  But IMHO, the difference between them and Yes and especially ELP is that Pete actually wrote many many great songs. I never got into Yes or ELP because the Beatles taught me it wasn't about virtuosity, it was about the song.  Musicianship and even theatrics - I love Bowie - but only in service to the song.  Could name the Yes and ELP songs I thought were good on one hand.

And my recollection, and I was very heavy into the NY punk scene, is that there was a grudging respect among the punks for the Who, and less willingness by the "rough boys" to just dismiss Pete and Co. than they were to others.

Beats me, but I know that the Who got on my tits back in the 70s when they were superstars. I just didn't 'get' them then, and definitely don't 'get' them now. A nice, relaxing start, with the sea and wind and rain and rumbling of thunder, then Daltrey et al have to spoil it with their pretentious warblings and noodlings. A Who double bill, as well, so best away off to iTunes until this wee treat for Who fans is over.

My dearest male friend is a radio music programmer, and Clear Channel was nearly the death of him. He can put sets of music together so they flow seamlessly... It's an art and a pleasure, not a chore - if the dedication to music is there. He always tells me, "If the set is good, it takes you on a journey and leaves you with deep thoughts about where you just went."

RP is the closest thing to that wonderful era of vinyl and live bodies in a radio station, with little censorship (so "Who Are You?" could be played in its entirety without a bleep every time Daltrey sang the word "fuck.")  My friend keeps urging me to win the lottery, buy a radio station, and hire him. I really wish I could... But RP is the next best thing!

And as I type this, we've heard three Who songs in a row:

The Who - Quadrophenia
The Who - The Real Me
The Who - I Am The Sea

...i think contemporary albums lose a lot of program composition due to missing the structure which used to be dictated by side lengths...not that i feel arbitrary constrictions are neccessarily best format for all material, but at least they used to force producers to think more creatively when constructing an album, in a way that now they're too often rather lazy...
