![]() Firecracker (2006) [ larger cover art ] |
These fleeting charms of earth
Farewell, your springs of joy are dry
My soul now seeks another home
A brighter world on high
I'm a long time travelling here below
I'm a long time travelling away from home
I'm a long time travelling here below
To lay this body down
Farewell kind friends whose tender care
Has long engaged my love
Your fond embrace I now exchange
For better friends above
I'm a long time travelling here below
I'm a long time travelling away from home
I'm a long time travelling here below
To lay this body down...

My family is from the mountains of Southwestern VA and North Carolina and I grew up with Blue Grass, Folk, Mountain Music, etc. My parents dragged me to many a Blue Grass Festival in the '60s and '70s when I was a young, impressionable lad. Mom just passed away and I plan on using this wonderful song at her service. |
| Rebis (Chicago) | Posted: Jan 18, 2013 - 18:16 Thanks to RP I bought the Jennys' first disc. Now I'm about to buy this one too. |

| Clark_Novato (Novato, CA) | Posted: Oct 30, 2012 - 22:54 Sublime...I can feel my insides humming over the three-part harmonies. The other members of my house thought it was the Alison/Emylou/Gillian a cappella song from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", a flattering mistake if ever there was. |

| joelbb | Posted: Oct 09, 2012 - 19:11 This time it followed Ripple, a song about the existential road, just like that of the Long Time Taveller (sic). |

| Carl (The Summit City) | Posted: Oct 01, 2012 - 18:31 Now I get the thread here: Willie & Lobo followed by The Wailin' Jennys—two acts that came together serendipitously as a result of some random guy (a Canadian guitar shop owner in the Jennys' case, and a Mexican bar owner in W&L's) hearing them and suggesting they perform together as a group. (In the Jennys case, the guitar shop, Sled Dog Music, owner named them, as well.) Thank you, Wikipedia; got my donation's worth again! :-) |
| impediguy | Posted: Sep 29, 2012 - 11:22 I get goosebumps when this song begins. Amazing. |

| ch83575 | Posted: Sep 19, 2012 - 18:23 Kinda repetitive right? Just kidding, I LOVE this tune... they could sing the phone book for me and I would listen all the way through. |
| TerryS (Another SW) | Posted: Jul 18, 2012 - 19:52 Heard them sing this in both hemishperes, the only difference was the direction the speakers swirled. So good both times. |

And I'm sorry if there are any insults in there. As I don't speak Russian, I let google translate. |
| GarageDragon | Posted: Apr 19, 2012 - 07:12 This song made me realize the true criterion for ratings is related to how quickly I rush to crank up the volume. |
| KaiT (Toronto Canada) | Posted: Mar 09, 2012 - 09:34 Wailin' is right. Lovely as it is, I could only take this in small doses. The pitches have a "nails on chalkboard" for me after a while. |

| Johnny-smooth (On my bicycle) | Posted: Feb 09, 2011 - 12:00 Rec'd this CD for Christmas couple of years back. At first listen, oh hum, sounded a little too poppy for my tastes. But over the years, the CD has continued to grow on me, this song one of many fine tunes. Now a favorite. |

| DaMoGan (Body on the east coast, Mind on the west coast.) | Posted: Dec 18, 2010 - 13:45 I think this piece is proof that a song does not need to be complex to be beautiful. The structure is about as straight-forward as you can get, the harmonies are beautiful but not particularly unique, and yet you take the whole together and it is somehow profound. |
