Funny to hear this after the Ben Howard song and comments therein. :)

Lots of influences coming together in this fine, edgy tune; maybe that's why it's difficult to date - sounds quite 70's to me. All the same it's very listenable once in a while.

Dusty Springfield might ask for a cut of his sales! Very derivative- but a catchy tune never the less.

Maybe he's the secret love child of Dusty and Joe Cocker?  (I also heard SOaPM when it started)

It's been several months since I commented, and I've been listening to Mr. LaMontagne a lot thanks to gift CDs from my younger son.

I'll say this song sounds like Joe Cocker, due to the funky drum backbeats, and the Fender Rhodes piano and the piano playing style.  Most of Mr. LaMontagne's stuff that I've heard has a different setting and doesn't sound like Mr. Cocker.

For some reason, I thought it important to report this to the group.

Whew!  I was about to open myself up for a public flogging by saying he reminds me of Joe Cocker.  Ray's voice isn't as rough, which may mean "not as good" in some evaluations.  Both are serious practitioners of the "sing and whine and moan" art form.

Well, there was your Lee Michaels comparison.

Thanks Bill, it was fun to hear the Lee Michaels tune before this... and Jelani, I think you might be right... there probably was some influence there.

Ray is just amazing... his raspy voice, the soul... *gasp*  One of the best artists around.  Terribly awkward when interviewed {#Wink}, but a true artist... maybe that qualifies him more as a "true artist."  {#Notworthy}

Hearing this after 'Be Here Now' shows quite a versatility of style. I hear the Joe Cocker thing also. Quite Likable.

He has a brand new album out on 9th September

It's called Gossip in the grain.

I've heard and also have a couple of tracks from it with 'winter birds' being a bit special.
