![]() Holland (1973) [ larger cover art ] |
I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, sail on sailor
I wrest the waters, fight Neptune's waters
Sail through the sorrows of life's marauders
Unrepenting, often empty
Sail on, sail on sailor
Caught like a sewer rat alone but I sail
Bought like a crust of bread, but oh do I wail
Seldom stumble, never crumble
Try to tumble, life's a rumble
Feel the stinging I've been given
Never ending, unrelenting
Heartbreak searing, always fearing
Never caring, persevering
Sail on, sail on, sailor
I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
Uninspired, drenched and tired
Wail on, wail on, sailor
Always needing, even bleeding
Never feeding all my feelings
Damn the thunder, must I blunder
There's no wonder all I'm under
Stop the crying and the lying
And the sighing and my dying
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor
Sail on, sail on sailor

| lemmoth (NYC) | Posted: Mar 14, 2013 - 07:58 Kinda funny watching Blondie Chaplin singing backup and cavorting with Keith and the Stones knowing he sang lead on this wonderful tune. |

The album also came with a small 45 sized EP called "Mount Vernon and Fairway" which is a curious piece of work. Never was quite sure what to make of that... "Holland" is a great album. I think this song is one of the weakest one on it. "Funky Pretty" and "California" are far superior songs. "Mt. Vernon and Fairway" is way out there though. (#lol) |

Love both of those songs. |
| a2sportsguy | Posted: Mar 09, 2012 - 11:57 This is indeed Blondie Chaplin. He took the vocal after Carl couldn't nail it… More about how the song came to be here… http://playitandbedamned.blogspot.com/2008/01/unsung-hero-blondie-chaplin.html |

| cogbehaviour (Finger Lakes of NYS) | Posted: Feb 06, 2012 - 18:59 This can be seen as allegorical. The metaphor isn't original but the structure is unique. A great song because it touches themes that are universal. |

I'll be heading to the beach in a week and this will be in my playlist. Maybe not a 10 all the time, but while looking at the ocean, it will be an 11. Nigel Tufnel, you're my hero! Well, it's not print per se, but this Wiki account pretty much substantiates what is generally acknowledged, i.e., Blondie's vocal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sail_On,_Sailor I saw one of Rick Danko's many post-Band bands long ago. Chaplin played guitar, and sang their rendition of "Sail On Sailor." Sure sounded like the same voice as that on the Beach Boys' recording. Guess that's not print either. Sigh. |

| jimcummings | Posted: Oct 21, 2010 - 13:32 Agreed, The "later" Beach Boy Albums such as Surfs UP and Holland are a revelation, full of mature exploration of their sound and excellent musicanship all supporting beautiful, wistful lyrics. Jim Cummings KurtfromLaQuinta wrote: What jjafri said. Everyone should listen to "Surfs Up" and "Holland". "Surfs Up" has some awesome songs on it... "Don't Go Near the Water" "Long Promised Road" "Disney Girls (1957)" "Feel Flows" "'Til I Die" "Surf's Up" "Holland" has THE best song about California EVER... "California Saga/ California" Have you ever been down Salinas way? Where Steinbeck found the valley And he wrote about it the way it was in his travelin's with Charley And have you ever walked down through the sycamores Where the farmhouse used to be There the monarch's autumn journey ends On a windswept cyprus tree "Trader" "Only With You" "Funky Pretty" If you haven't heard these songs before... you have definitely missed out. It really wasn't all surf music. |

For me, it's at least partly because of the absence of the OOOEEEOOO falsettos characteristic of so many of their other songs (and which the Beatles deftly lampooned in "Back in the USSR"). |
