(sniff) Me too. Hee-haw on the kitchen Black and White TV on a Saturday night. My mother washing dishes, me in my pajamas at the kitchen table dunking oreos in milk....cackling at skits like "you met another and...PFFFFT you was gone"...

I didn't care for country music, which is pretty much all you heard there, but I my feelings weren't for his music.

He was a shrewd business man, but came to screw a lot of people. My father was involved in one of the community organizations, and it's big fundraiser was a chili cookoff. It raised a ton of dough for local needy children.

One year Buck volunteered to help, and everyone thought he was a great guy, and giving back to the community. The next year, he formed a for profit chili cookoff, that completely decimated their biggest fund raiser. He basically sucked all knowledge about how to run one, and gathered contacts, then screwed the charitble organization and their mission.

What a tool.

My brother was friends with one of his bandmates kids, but we still didn't like Buck.

The other thing that was a drag was he came to own many radio stations. His programming for local rock stations was incredibly mundane MOR, and frustrating.

Needless to say, I don't care how influential has was in country music, and preceived as a rebel and all that. Once he made it, he show what an axxhole he was. I will never listen to his music.

Now Merle Haggard is another story. He had a guitar shaped swimming pool and a beer train.

Then maybe this song is appropriate.

Interesting insights. The chili-cookoff scam sounds typical of that particular event: the one(s) in Terlingua and elsewhere have practically come to violence. Radio station-wise, they play what the widest audience wants, which, sadly, is right down the middle of the road. Which is why we're here at RP!

Merle Haggard spent much of his early life in jail: "Mama Tried" is a true story. Obviously his experiences affected his tastes in pools and locomotives.

Not the first time I heard this from a Bakersfield local. Whatever praise we can heap on a person for persevering and succeeding in the cutthroat music industry, especially someone from the background of a Buck Owens, once they attain some measure of fame and success, we expect them to back off! Not arguing, just sort of odd on our part.
