Devils advocate:

how is that different from most pop songs (good and bad alike) which recycle the same chord progressions over and over.

Hell, PM Dawn's Jesus wept samples tons of stuff.  I recall, for example, that Downtown Venus samples Deep Purple (kentucky woman?) but I'm certain I never would have known it was in there if i hadn't read the credits, and I'm sure they could have gotten someone to reproduce the snippets (and probably without paying a royalty).

Sampling can be done in very original ways that I sometimes think are harder to come up with than to just hire some session guys to come in and fill in the blanks.

In the end, it's just using a different palate.  And in all cases it can be great and it can suck.  Virtually everyone samples.  Hell, Dream Theater sampled on Images And Words.

I'm not a big fan of DJs butchering classics but this one is actually enjoyable.

I think RP has the Noir Desir original in rotation.
