With regards to people calling this song 'pretentious'...

Agreed.

Seconded.

And in shorter words, using the word pretentious means "It's too smart for me."

(I personally knew the Basquiat name only before hearing the song, but that was it. I googled him and became wiser.)

Did you notice the knot on the cover is in the form of a heart?

And yet people get on to us who just say I think this song sucks, can't have it both ways or are we just supposed to fawn over the songs or be quiet?? Works in China like that and America is on its way.{#Whistle}

Of course you are saying that with a funny operatic voice, right?  With a finger thrust into the air as you emphasize "they?"  I just love irony.

The simple quantity of CJs on RP leaves your argument gasping for relevance, WK.  Try harder next time.

Since when did being well-read and educated become pretentious? I for one enjoy it when I learn something new from a song.

I get the picture that she is aware of how special and open and gifted her children are but knows that such people have a harder path ahead of them, so she is speculating on how the world may come down on them -- maybe, maybe. It ends on a hopeful note, but I do love the darker sound of this song and the complexity of both the music and lyrics.

She's not singing about pride in her children; more like worrying about what they'll become. "One day he'll be shaken, maybe taken, Perhaps to bleed"
I have a 2 year old, and I'm already worried about what trouble she's going to get herself into. I like to think I'm a bit more optimistic than this song, but I know where Margo's coming from.

"There was this little prince with a magic crown. An evil warlock kidnapped him, locked him in a cell in a huge tower and took away his voice. There was a window made of bars. The prince would smash his head against the bars hoping that someone would hear the sound and find him. The crown made the most beautiful sound that anyone ever heard. You could hear the ringing for miles. It was so beautiful, that people wanted to grab the air. They never found the prince. He never got out of the room. But the sound he made filled everything up with beauty."

- Julian Schnabel from the movie Basquiat

I like the sound of the crown against the bars in the background of this song. It's sweet and sad.

I saw them at a free concert in a park a few years ago. This dude on stage right was ripping off solos on a bass guitar, and it sounded just like the solo stuff in this song. Didn't really fit in with the mellow vibe of their set, but I loved it.
