I am so glad to have been alive in a time-frame that encompasses such great innovators of style and groove! John Lee Hooker has influenced and inspired countless greats, and one of them, Big Head Todd, is bringing some of that back around to his homies December 15th at The Fox Theater in Boulder; can't wait!

1964 at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, England - where I finally "got"  what R&B and the Blues were all about and what and why the Brit groups of the time were worshipping ( and introducing all of us young sponges) to the fantastic music of JLH, MW, HW, BBK et al.  Thanks John - always my favourite - RIP man.

My John Lee Hooker story happened years ago in Detroit.  I was sixteen years old.  I'd heard that John was playing at a very small club called the Chessmate.  I was too young to legally get in, but I begged the guy at the door.  I told him I'd walked several miles just to get to the club, which was true.  I had very little money.  He took pity on me and said I could go in for a little while but they wouldn't sell me any liquor.  That was fine with me.  I just wanted to hear and see John Lee.  

They put me in a seat away from everyone else, very close to the band.  After a short wait, the band entered, with John Lee last.  He sat down, got himself comfortable and began tuning his guitar.  He looked at me and said in that gruff voice, "How you doin' kid?".  The band then proceeded to crank out the blues.  Great evening for me.
