Actually there was quite a lot of chill that came out in 1998 — about the start of the genre, I would say (although Wikipedia is stating early to mid-90's).  The first Cafe Del Mar collection was released in 1999.  Other compilations albums (Buddha Bar, Hotel Costes, and just about anything with Ibiza in the title) began coming out in 2002-2003.  The various artists on these compilations were mostly recorded a few years prior.  If you'd like to explore more of this kind of music, sample these compilations — there is a wealth of artists to discover!

The first Buddha Bar double cd was released in 1999, and subsequent releases have followed at the rate of one per year since 2000. I have enjoyed them all, but in my opinion the original has never been bettered.

Also, don't forget predecessors such as Enigma. The beat here is nearly identical to a track of theirs from 1994.

You must have some pretty cool stores in the UK. I've never been in a store in the US that would play this.

Cool track. The Amazon reviews (what few there are) are mixed- a couple people's favorite album, especially in the UK; someone else thought the tunes with vocals were diva-esque and over the top. Anyone else heard the whole album?

This was someone else's review:
A hidden gem of the world of psychedelia

I stumbled upon this CD purely by accident. Listened to it a few times and thought, well, this is interesting, but it wasnt until I slapped it on during a particularly fierce mushroom trip that I really GOT it. I have a good older audiophile quality system, and in a dark room with the volume plentiful, I moved around INSIDE of the music on this album, and was awestruck. It is fully obvious to me that this album was crafted specifically to lead one through a trip, with tension and release, fear and comforting, sadness and resolution, in waves coming with the different songs. Absolutely a masterpiece when viewed in this light, and heartily recommended for that special experience. These guys knew what they were doing, and did it well. Check it out under psychedelic influence, and see if you dont agree. Masterful, touching, beautiful, and intense. Happy trails!
