Lift me, won't you lift me above the old routine;
Make it nice, play it clean jazzman.
When the jazzman's testifyin' a faithless man believes
he can sing you into paradise or bring you to your knees.
It's a gospel kind of feelin', a touch of Georgia slide,
a song of pure revival and a style that's sanctified.
Jazzman take my blues away; make my pain
the same as yours with every change you play.
Jazzman, oh jazzman.
When the jazzman's signifyin', and the band is windin' low.
It's the late night side of morning in the darkness of his soul.
He can fill a room with sadness as he fills his horn with tears.
He can cry like a fallen angel when risin' time is near.
Jazzman take my blues away; make my pain
the same as yours with every change you play.
Oh lift me, won't you lift me with ev'ry turn around.
Play it sweetly, take me down, oh jazzman.
| calypsus_1 | Posted: Sep 21, 2010 - 21:53 ![]() Carole King by aprilbaby Michele Miles Gardiner http://www.flickr.com/photos/aprilbaby/ I've adored her since my childhood in the '70s. After school, I'd come home to dance and sing in my living room all alone," I feel the earth move...under my feet..." So in 1986, when she came to the studio my then boyfriend (now husband) ran, to cut a demo, I was speechless. Seriously, I couldn't speak. Back then, my husband invited me to his recording sessions. I would sit on the couch reading to keep myself busy. Occasionally, I was even asked to do background vocals. Okay, once. But this day, when Carole came, I said not one word. I painted with my water colors and just listened, too afraid to say something stupid - like I usually do. But being the friendly person she is, she came down and sat on the couch next to me, "Wow, I love your shoes!" she said, holding up the shoe I had taken off. I was mortified. Back then, I was so broke I wore my shoes down to the nails in the heels. Anyway, I relaxed enough to ask if I could take this photo in front of the studio with my Pentax. She's holding my husband's bass. I love Carole. . |

| tputkey | Posted: Jun 04, 2008 - 17:18 the only thing that redeems this song is that it Lisa played it. |
| rtrudeau (Bay Area, California) | Posted: Jun 04, 2008 - 17:17 This woman is a legend. Instant 6 for her awesome talent, +1 for the pure nostalgia (god, I loved that Tapestry album to death back in the day), and another +1 for standing up to Colbert on the "Report." She gives great interview. |
| Rathmar (Albuquerque, NM) | Posted: Jun 04, 2008 - 17:17 When I hear this song all I can think about is the Simpsons episode where Lisa performed this song with Bleeding Gums Murphy. *Edit: Squiddish beat me to it by seconds! ;) |

| That_SOB (The Dark Side of the Tune) | Posted: May 04, 2008 - 07:15 I wonder how many young women have listened to Ms. King and begged their lucky stars they could be 10% the singer/songwriter Carol is/was... Some seem to forget that these were the "formative years ." |
| billbangert (Cincinnati) | Posted: May 04, 2008 - 07:11 WHAT??? This has to be a mistake. This sounds horrible on RP. |
