![]() Modern Guilt (2008) [ larger cover art ] |
Think I'm stranded but I don't know where
I got this diamond I don't know how to shine
In the sun where the dark winds wail
And these children leave their rulers behind
As we cross ten leagues from a rubicon
The matchsticks for my bones
If we can learn how to freeze ourselves alive
We can learn to leave these burdens to burn
Cast out these creatures of woe
Who shatter themselves
Fighting the fire with your bare hands
Now my journey takes me further south
I want to hear what the blind men sing
With their fossils and their gypsy bones
I'll stand beside myself so I'm not alone
And how can I make new again
What rusts every time it rains
And the rain it comes and floods our lungs
We're just orphans in a tidal wave's wake
If I wake up and see my maker coming
With all of his crimson and his iron desire
We'll drag the streets with the baggage of longing
To be loved or destroyed from a void
To a grain of sand in your hand

That album gave me the impression that he had just run out of ideas and was basically treading water. I did pick up "Modern Guilt" from the library recently and it is an improvement over "The Information" but not enough that I felt that I had to add it to my collection. Maybe he's past his creative peak, or maybe there are still some masterpieces on the horizon. Only time will tell. Trying to be fair with Beck, one could say that he's got talent, but at the same time the good ideas don't come too often to his mind. |

Beck's best effort by far.......this song is good, but far from the best this album has to offer. Go get it. |

| Shimmer (Bethesda, MD) | Posted: Nov 17, 2008 - 10:41 Beck and the Eels are slowly merging into a single entity. |

| kmh (NY) | Posted: Sep 12, 2008 - 20:04 I'd chose him over Brad Pitt anyday! |

Do they exist? Any recommendations? Not yet as far as I know. And since his styles are so diverse and eclectic, a 'Greatest Hits' with a mix from all his albums would not flow well together. But hey, that what iTunes is for! Just get a couple songs from each album for a good sample. A quick internet search will tell you which song/songs were the hits from each album (although IMO the hits weren't always the best songs). |
| DELTA__9__FOOLS (Dirtona, FL) | Posted: Aug 06, 2008 - 09:28 I would really love if they played more tracks off this album. |

| WonderLizard (2,755.46 mi. due east of Paradise) | Posted: Aug 01, 2008 - 10:11 I had this really weird dream last night that Beck had died, and we were going through his stuff. It was all a bunch of random Americana—even his parents seemed to be just lying around. And someone said, "So this is where he gets his ideas..." |

That would be cool if it were true, but I think Beck's scientology was passed on to him by his parents. |
