Yes, I thought it was the Cat the first time I heard this song too. It's something he would have done back then.

Nice movie... nice song.

Please don't over play it though - it won't hold up if played too often.

I don't hate Glen Hansard because he was in the Commitments, so he's always gonna be cool for that. But I sure hate this song and didn't think much of the movie "Once." Whiney? Hoo boy!

Wow, coincidence... I just finished watching "Once" about an hour ago.  Before watching the movie, I didn't know that I'd heard this song on RP, but when it came on, I recognized it right away.  A pretty good movie, enjoyable, but not one that I'd watch over and over.

I also agree. The film is sweet and an honest look at life. The music fit in the film. But on it's own, it makes me cringe a bit. I feel bad about that.

Well the boy doesn't get the girl, but I've certainly seen more depressing things than that. Although it takes alot for me to get emotional at something.

This was a great movie - Not for everyone, but I quite enjoyed it.

The soundtrack was fantastic, and this song (in context, especially) is fantastic.

Shame they're no longer an item, though I'm not at ALL surprised with the age difference.  Love makes you do dumb things, I suppose

This song really needs to be heard in the context of the film Once - which is absolutely beautiful, one of best movies about music and musicians you'll ever see. Filmed in Dublin on low budget, it's the story of an Irish busker and a Czech teenager who end up making some gorgeous music together and nearly do, but don't, fall in love. The two actors are musicians not actors, and sing and wrote the songs. The sexual tension between the two in the film is palpable, and the cute thing is the two actors did get together, later after the film shoot, despite a wide age gap.

Surprisingly, I'm now thinking this song is really excellent. Turns out all I needed was distance of about a year from the last time it was played to death on the radio.

Thanks for redeeming this song, Bill and Rebecca!

Yep. A rock-solid 3 from the Nottingham jury as it's got Ho-Hum written all over it. Maybe the movie is the dog's bollox and this song fits into it beautifully, but on its own it's dullsville, IMO.

It was this scene in the film, complete with its missed notes and other "imperfections," that caused my conversion.  Both the song and the film are utterly enchanting.  Never tire of hearing it.

Agreed. "Date movie" makes it sound like a formulaic romantic comedy. It's definitely romantic (in the broadest sense of the word), but it is neither formulaic nor a comedy.

Well, it sure worked in the movie, which I thought was terrific. Here on RP, however, it does seem mediocre in this context. If it was programmed to play only in the morning, maybe, but at quarter of three (afternoon) I'm in need of a little pick-me-up.

Yes, I quite agree! Not Ingrid Bergman, perhaps, but hardly Pee-Wee Herman. Considering it won an Oscar, and made loads more money than its original micro-budget, it was not only a massive success by any standard, but it was never meant to be "Gone With The Wind" in the first place. Just a little old film from Ireland, by an up-and-coming director, with a fairly famous muso-bloke and a talented young lady who happen to be mates, acting in a little story about friendship and music, in today's new and evolving Dublin... Expectations based upon "hype" and "ratings" often lead to disappointment, and then the words "over-hyped" or "over-rated" are bandied about, like everyone asked you to expect a masterpiece. Find out for yourself, don't rely on others, you'll only want to have your say anyway, after seeing it. Perhaps the disappointment will be less bitter, of the satisfaction sweeter...
