Eric Clapton - Little Wing, Live
Live 05-03-2008 - Tampa, Florida. Great performance of Little Wing.

"This is the version that Clapton and Duane Allman came up with when they covered this song in 1970 for the Layla album. It's not meant to sound like the Hendrix version. Between the intro and solos, there's some awesome improv guitar playing here. Don't be fooled by the crap video, the audio quality is great. Turn up the volume and listen properly! "      sonofapache

"It's Doyle Bramhall ll. His daddy worked with SRV. He's a good guitarist. I think i see Pino Palladino to the right."     TMMSfanCLUB

"Can Clapton do the song justice? probably not, but then again not many can. Is clapton's playing predictable? maybe. I do think he was more creative in his days with Cream and his brief stint with Derek and the Dominos.  I like Clapton for his clean technique and execution. I like Hendrix for his raw, visceral talent. I try not to compare the two for it's impossible because each has a very different technique and feel to their playing. I enjoy both for who they are."       SgtSplatter782

"Jimi lasted 5-6 years of solid recording in the rock world... eric is going on 50 years.. both have transformed rock.. and are great men.. t/y to eric and the great bands that he gets together.. each year.. he has carried on the legacy of the ultimate rock star.. for 6 decades and has shown no signs of slowing down !!!"   Ezwider109

"One of Hendrix' own heros covering one of his songs. He must be smiling down from heaven"      SausageRollsRawsome

Clapton is tired, bored and out of ideas, and it shows in this lethargic version of one of the all time great tunes.

Ho effin hum.

I'd like to see these guys play together ... This version of the band would be pretty amzing group of musicians. Yeah this song ain't jimi or stevie but who is. I like it and the guitar /keyboard interplay is well done.

Ok...oh...ok...look...how many times do we have to hear this covered by various artists? Though it's not a bad version...I've heard this blasted tune so many damn times..I'm starting to like it less. I like the older original versions of this tune...but these two mediocre, wealthy musicians don't cut it. Not by a long shot. I'm sure those EC or SW fans will gobble this up as 'tasty'. I think it's shrill filler!

The rest of us will just be glad he's still alive and able to pluck a string, thank you.

I think the version on "Layla and other..." was better.  At least it was recorded near the time of Hendrix' death, so EC probably had some real emotion put in the tune.

Kudos to anyone brave enough to tackle this song.  When Jimi sang this, his voice was really light, and not at all weighty - like this is.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Little Wing, Live
"Stevie Ray Vaughan doing 2 Hendrix covers, Little Wing and a bit of Third Stone From The Sun."

—//—

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood - Live from Madison Square Garden (2008):

"History rocked and rock made history during a sold-out three-gig stand at Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969. Whether they will ever team again is unknown. But with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live From Madison Square Garden, fans everywhere are able to experience the sound and the glory of a performance on that famous stage by two of rock's greatest artists."

Personnel: Eric Clapton (guitar/vocals), Steve Winwood (guitar/vocals/keyboards), Willie Weeks (bass), Chris Stainton (keyboards), Ian Thomas (drums).

" "Little Wing
" is a song written by Jimi Hendrix. He first recorded the song on the 1967 album Axis: Bold as Love. It is ranked #357 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and has been covered by numerous artists, notably Derek and the Dominos, Rod Stewart, Andy Timmons, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Monte Montgomery, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Pearl Jam, Sting, John Mayer, Skid Row, The Corrs, Toto, Tak Matsumoto, John Petrucci, Concrete Blonde, Paul Rodgers, Iiro Rantala New Trio and many others. Stevie Ray Vaughan's version earned a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1993." in Wikipedia

Winwood is one of those guys who plays lots of instruments well.  Aside from his well-known keyboard work, he plays guitar, bass, mandolin, and probably some others I am not aware of.  And it seems he plays them all very well.  Go back to some of his albums all the way to Traffic and check out the credits.  You'll see.

Just a guess, but I would suspect that Hammond organ you hear is being played by Winwood, and the kick ass guitar is being played by Clapton.

Unless they decided to play a "switch show."

Then again, Chris Stainton also played keyboard, so maybe Winwood was playing guitar. Don't know. Anyone have the DVD?

Hmm, blues rock I'd say - no 'roll' in this or many other Hendrix numbers. I don't think this cover is a patch on the Hendrix version (I'm guessing Jimi's came first), not least because Clapton, whilst a sh1t-hot blues guitar player, is a rubbish singer. 5 from the Nottingham jury for this version, 8 for the Hendrix version, 9 for the Hamsters version.
