I never know a Grateful Dead song when I hear it, but I came here to rate it a 1 anyway.  I would find a single 5 minute long tone more interesting then this.  Maybe I didn't smoke enough pot in my life or something.  Meh.  One day I hope to get really really high and "discover" the dead.

this song (these songs?) will always and forever remind me of the MST3K where one of the robot/puppets does an interminable guitar solo...makes me smile!

Nice! This is a timeless classic (played live in 1972!).

The lyrical poetry of Robert Hunter. Classic.{#Cheers}

I was plugged into Robert's sound one night at Toad's Place. He let me and my roommate record the whole show, and we had some interesting conversation, too.

Best harmony singing in those days, and in that "California" sound was Crosby, Stills and Nash.  Jefferson Airplane & Byrds good too.

None were as good as earlier kings of harmony singning the Beach Boys and of course the Beatles.

As much as I agree with you about Robert Hunter; 'I Know You Rider' is actually a traditional arrangement and was not written by Hunter or Garcia.

China Cat Sunflower —> I Know You Rider is a great combination thought, it will always be one of my favorites.

Overdubbed?  I don't think so, saw them right before they left for Europe(saw Pigpen alive) and this was the way it sounded to me that night.

I had the previalage of seeing the GD live a few times. The entire scene was a unique experience. For people who don't "get the Dead", they seem to be unable to appreciate community, openness, new experiences and Spirit. Not to mention the intelligent business minds ahead of their time. With so much loyal support...their particular vibe rose to incredible heights.  They might not be my fav band musically yet then entire DG experience has been one of the most heart felt. Thank you RP.

I had two friends who in their college dayhung out with Deadheads. A bunch of them would gather in a room, get stupid-wasted on pot and zone out to the Dead. My friends got tired of that scene when they realized that these people had no lives and invariably started their conversations with references to the Dead and "Dude, Jerry..."

This is definitely a "Dude, Jerry..." song but in a good way.

Grateful Dead - China-Rider
John Lee Hooker - Dimples
The Raconteurs - Many Shades of Black (w/ Adel
Etta James - Something's Got a Hold on Me

Great set.  It's the stuff I can open the doors and crank it up and the neighbors will say something like "Well that old hippy still likes to rock" (granted that's a best-case scenario).  We don't have many open-door days here in the jungle so this is much appreciated. And it's still going on with these:

Tom Petty - Runnin' Down A Dream
Death Cab For Cutie - Soul Meets Body

Awesome Bill. You're my hero for sure.
