Great song! John was fanatically into thumbing it to whatever The Establishment considered the norm. I loved The Vines' version of it, too!

If we don't consider about 99.36% of all other songs ever recorded, this one isn't very good.   {#Good-vibes}

Romeotuma is no longer. He is now known as Lazarus. He has a church in said room and is recuiting Radio Paradise members to join. I am starting a list and will post at a later date. All in can send me a private message that I will pass on to the minister. {#Wave}

I love the nice woody sound of Paul's Hofner bass with flat wound strings, a set up that he continues to use to this day.

Here's some context:  The Billboard Year-End Hot 100 for 1966.  The Beatles tracks on this list are, in ascending order, "Yellow Submarine" (96), "Nowhere Man" (90), "Paperback Writer" (28), and "We Can Work It Out" (16).  There's no question that "I'm Only Sleeping" stands out as different from these four tracks as well as pretty much everything else on that list.  The backmasking on this track (remember, decades before digital, and pretty innovative with audiotape) may not be a sound you like, but it makes it stand apart, even today.

Maybe so, but I love it anyway. You also have to wonder how many other good-to-great works this song inspired, even though it might not have aired without being played by the Beatles.

Put it in it's context and it's got very high production values wrapped around a simple tune. Mind you, I did buy the original UK (extra tracks) LP in the day.

I don't care that it's the Beatles. John wrote many songs that were better than this. This one is overly simple, repetitive and is ultimately uninteresting. Heroics in the studio can't save it! I give it a 3.

Though I like the song, regardless...I think you've touched on a point. Such like the tune 'Within You Without You' off of Sgt. Pepper. It's rated high...and no one would rate it that high if it wasn't Beatles.

Yes, Sgt Pepper's, Abbey Road...you name it... were wonderful albums - but to me this is the essential Beatles.
It is the one that I reach for when I haven't listened to them for a while.
I just believe this is at the core of what made their music timeless.

Congrats! Got mine for Christmas last year and it's sitting right here on my desk. I uploaded the disks into iTunes for my devices and stereo. I also renamed the albums by prepending the year each was produced (with an a and b for several that came out in same years) so they sort in chronological vs. alphabetical order by album name. (I could have done this with a smart playlist, too.) Anyway, it's interesting to see how they evolved over a brief time. Quite amazing, actually. One of the things I'm thankful for is to have had my "formative years" during the Beatles peak reign.

Yes, they were.  As an even earlier example, they used key changes in "If I Fell."  They weren't afraid to try doing things that weren't necessarily done (at least in Rock).

I'd love to stick around and debate this, but I have to cook dinner and decide what to wear to work tomorrow.

For once, I have to disagree with you Cynaera.  This is not a throwaway song, it's misleadingly simple with a great deal of depth, a quietly dark piece. I think John was supposed to be going through a deep depression at the time he was writing for this album.

Curious about three things: 1.  How recording "throw away songs" would help placate critics.  2.  How does "getting lives" preclude us from debating the artistic merit of music? 3.  What did you end up cooking and wearing the following day?

God, I miss John Lennon. Without him The Beatles would not have had a slight darkness that kept them balanced. They would have only been happy, poppy tunes like Penny Lane etc. Even 'A Day In The Life' has that solemn melancholy sound...and then breaks for the Paul McCartney middle eight section...well I'm not knocking PM...I just love Lennon's contributions so much more.

you know, i'm not really a fan of Lennon or McCarney's solo stuff, but together they were magic.
