not sure why RP plays this guy so much.  there's only so much Tom Petty i can take on a daily basis.

So clearly the same era and similar style to Thin Lizzy - really reminds me of them, or them of this :)

Classic.

Live music is for the living.

Well, being as I have no empathy for football. I can't comment on it being fun (although I have been to matches in the past).

But as a regular live music attender I can sympathise. I have been to hundreds of gig's where to be there and be part of the crowd is just fantastic - the energy, the shared smiles, the dancing, the sheer excitement.

But on rare occasions - usually at larger venues, but not exclusively - I have had to endure people around me shouting (not singing) the lyrics at the top of their ill advised voices and totally ruining the gig for me. Yes, you can call me a grumpy old git - but it is actually a bugbear of mine including people trying to shout a conversation while someone is performing so that it disturbs people (me) around them.

Yes, I can have a fine old time at a gig, I can still jump up and down and shout, scream, whistle, clap and bop like I always have. . . but I have a sense of sharing my space with my fellow listeners.

Those who spoil it for others by making it difficult to enjoy what one has usually paid a lot for can, in my humble opinion, fuck off.

Often I share your view, but to me, this is one of the exceptions. I love this live performance, excellently delivered, and the feeling of how the audience responds. It's brilliant. I am always transported.

Tom Petty is, and has remained, true to his RnR style. The guy is authentic... the highest praise I might give someone, BTW.

Agreed. It is worse when in the middle of a crowd and people are shouting conversations all round you while you are trying to enjoy the gig.

I am close to having a t-shirt printed with "I have paid for a ticked to listen to this -  so will you kindly SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

Maybe think of it this way:  When the groove is right, there's all manner of improvisations that keep the groove going.  A lot of live music is about wandering, testing, playing, and just getting saturated in the whole experience.  If an artist is comfortable with the band, and if the audience is receptive, it's pretty hard to stick to the original version of a song. It's about playfulness, flexibility, and trust.

If you're not happy with the live version of this, stick with the studio version and quit bitching. (I mean that in a gently snarky way, with a hug and a cup of chamomile tea.)

see the Irish rock band known as U2 as a point of reference...
