Deep and thoughtful rendition of a profoundly deep and moving song...Beck has made another selfless major contribution with this one.

I think this is a great track, and Beck really seems to channel Martyn on it. Somehow he makes his voice sound like him too. I imagine it's intentional, but it works.

I am watching Sandy right now.  Sposed to get a lot worse.  Not bad right now.  They call it "Frankenstorm" here on the coast.  Gov shut down today.  Working from home. Thanks for the hurricane set, Bill.

Seconded. Anyway, a cult's a cult, whether 'established' or not. Plus the godsquad sure have produced some damn fine music over the decades, indeed centuries.

Yes, I myself, always make a point of keeping an artist's personal life and their music separate.  I would like to hear John Martyn's version of this piece, but this is a very nice cover, and I like a lot of what I hear from Beck.  This song seems almost to have been made for him.

Beck being a Scientologist doesn't bother me as much as Beck borrowing liberally from Nick Drake on this track bothers me. Scientology is really less of a religion than an organisation that provides anonymity and runs protection for it's celebrity followers. There's an excellent piece in The New Yorker that came out last winter outlining all of this.

So I definitely don't agree with his religious views, but no one has ever asked me to.  I do enjoy his music, though.

(Has there been a new law enacted that requires us to agree with the religious views of the artists whose music we enjoy?)
