If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise
If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise
He excites me
Must be like a genesis of rhythm
I get feisty
Whenever I'm with him
If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise
I'm a hot knife, I'm a hot knife
I'm a hot knife, he's a pat of butter
If I get a chance, I'm gonna show him that
He's never gonna need another, never need another
If I'm butter, if I'm butter
If I'm butter then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinemascope screen
Showing a dancing bird of paradise
I'm a hot knife, I'm a hot knife
I'm a hot knife, he's a pat of butter

| HearsayDave (a mysterious seaside village with Number Six) | Posted: Sep 08, 2012 - 14:45 Boy is this bad. When it gives me a headache, that's bad. And Apple's first album is much better than this. Please stop it. |
| TerryS (Another SW) | Posted: Sep 01, 2012 - 19:50 Rounds and drums, how could that be bad? |

If you personally have an issue with a song, just turn the volume off until the next comes along. I like this one, but rush to the volume control for "me in the corner losing my religion" or goats going to hell. Quite simple really. No head banging necessary. or use the "PSD" button to Play Something Different. No one likes everything played on an eclectic station like this, but of course, that's why we listen to it, rather than Pandora. . . just so we DO hear something that we have not heard before, and get a glorious mix of different genres. |
| Shesdifferent (Just visiting this planet) | Posted: Aug 27, 2012 - 09:13 I USE TO be a Fiona Apple fan......... |
| Colorado (Colorado Springs, CO) | Posted: Aug 24, 2012 - 19:15 This would be a good song to choreograph with modern jazz dance. |
| GINRUSH (Rochester, MI) | Posted: Aug 22, 2012 - 18:34 Love ya Fiona ... keep being yourself .... a true artist of all senses. |

| sajitjacob (Christchurch NZ) | Posted: Aug 13, 2012 - 16:18 It's good to know that there are still artists pushing the boundaries in a meaningful way, rather than just wearing meat.. "ohh look at me I'm so avant garde". How come we never hear Laurie Anderson on this station? |
| zair99 (In Cognito) | Posted: Aug 08, 2012 - 03:36 This song is a strange mix of styles. Can't decide if I like it. |
| cubaninlondon (London) | Posted: Aug 08, 2012 - 03:33 I need to buy this, pronto!!! Go, Fiona, you go, woman! ![]() Greetings from London. A Cuban In London. |

| gandalfbmg (Thankfully now a little more than 3 mi from Paradise (Missouri)) | Posted: Aug 01, 2012 - 09:22 So, I bought this album and have had it for a while, and I'm starting to form my opinion of it, from a die hard Fiona fan... Taken as an album, I think it's a failure. With When the Pawn... or Extraordinary Machine, I can put them on and listen through all the way, with maybe only one or two urges to skip a track. In fact, I think both are almost better when listened to that way, they are greater than each song taken alone. Not so with Idler Wheel... It's almost excruciating to listen to it straight through. It's TOO experimental. There's no flow from one melody into another... Now what is good: It's still Fiona's great, biting lyrics and singing style. And the songs, when they pop up individually in a shuffle session are mostly are actually pretty good taken alone... She made a great collection of experiemental sounding singles... But I was hoping for another album like the last couple, so I guess she's still in the business of doing what she wants, not what the audience wants... |
| kingart (Brooklyn NY) | Posted: Aug 01, 2012 - 09:20 It's certainly different. I applaud the attempt to make music that's not just a variation on love woes blues social emotional confusion. But this song overstays its welcome. A prolonged version of this might be equivalent to stereophonic waterboarding. |
| posworld (Michigan) | Posted: Aug 01, 2012 - 09:18 I can dig it. Fun to listen to. |
| govna (beantown) | Posted: Aug 01, 2012 - 09:16 i like it. |
| kaybee (Lost in the Wilds of Toronto) | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 16:45 Maybe it's the intricate, loony eccentricity along with the vocal gymnastics, but something about this piece to me hearkens vaguely to Tull or Led Zeppelin. I like it! |
| Kaisersosay (Mighty Mighty Bostown) | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:24 This is the one that sucked , not the previous song....... |
| dwlangham (Nowhere to be found) | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:22 This is so horrid I had to stop what I was doing at work to bitch and complain. FUCKING STOP IT ALREADY. |
| scrubbrush (All lost in the supermarket) | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:22 still crazy after all these years |
| dreadpixie | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:21 hot knife? pat of butter? please. |
| asilbuch | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:20 She is never dull...really like this. |
| macpeck | Posted: Jul 30, 2012 - 13:20 Really bad... |

If I'm not mistaken—can't tell from the credits on AMG—she's singing all the vocal parts. And she's continuing to develop her stylistic range, especially her jazz chops. I haven't gotten or heard the whole album yet, but if this is any indication, we have a massive talent on the verge of doing something very special if not monumental. It's one thing to work through your youthful issues (Tidal) and another to celebrate your blossoming artistry (Extraordinary Machine), but writing about the world around you, something outside yourself, is a major step. |
| Limpopoking (The Parish of St. Alfonzo) | Posted: Jul 24, 2012 - 09:24 Can't believe you have all given it such a poor rating I thought it was exciting! |
| cubaninlondon (London) | Posted: Jul 24, 2012 - 09:22 I like it more and more with each listen. Well done, Fiona! A Cuban In London. |
| drewd | Posted: Jul 24, 2012 - 09:22 Everyone in my group therapy session dislikes this song. (except for the guy who thinks dislike is too strong of a word and has negative connotations.) |

I agree with you about the Laurie Anderson similarity, although this is catchier than Laurie's stuff. |

| ce (The Netherlands) | Posted: Jul 13, 2012 - 05:49 Reminds me of Zap Mama This is probably AWESOME live, but on my typing-headphones it's just ... not. To distracting do anything.. |
| shutter (You can't get here from there) | Posted: Jul 13, 2012 - 05:47 Confession. After a few listens I've come around on this one. There's something that hooked me. Mebbe the piano chords, the drumming or mebbe it's just a quirky enough and original-enough sounding track. I'm up to an 8 on it now. Or it coulda just been the purple microdot... |
| Rockit (Ottawa ON) | Posted: Jul 13, 2012 - 05:43 I think Fiona is doing too many hot knives! |
| merobreno | Posted: Jul 07, 2012 - 17:16 Hot Knife to the brain. Sonic root canal. Aural colonoscopy. Only for the masochistic. Right up there with Phillip Glass. Cool beacuse you think it has to be. |

| lkovathana (Chicago, Illinois) | Posted: Jul 07, 2012 - 17:06 The cover art does not reveal the light-hearted music within. I wonder what the thought process was behind featuring such an off-putting portrait on the cover. Addendum — Starbucks and other distributors added another overleaf to the cover, featuring a black/white photo of Fiona Apple. Apparently the original cover was repulsive to most distributors as well. |
| Droidac (Blacklight District) | Posted: Jul 07, 2012 - 17:06 This is different, and different is GOOD!!!! |
| 4merdj (donde el viento se devuelve) | Posted: Jul 03, 2012 - 15:56 How's the whole album? I'm not crazy about this track. I own a couple of her earlier CDs ... |

| Wizzee (Doha, Qatar) | Posted: Jun 29, 2012 - 02:54 New to RP and loving it. Tracks like this make you stop and listen - music not sound. |

| cubaninlondon (London) | Posted: Jun 25, 2012 - 13:05 Once again, Fiona delivers. Just when pop needed a shot in the arm, along comes Ms Apple. I'll be buying this one; I've got her three previous albums. They never leave my stereo and I've got them on my mp3 player, too. Bill is right. This is not her longest album title. "When the Pawn Hits the Conflict He Thinks Like a King" is a good contender. A Cuban In London. |
| rpRascal | Posted: Jun 25, 2012 - 12:53 Intriguing. First time I've heard Apple. Will check out more. Thanks RP. |
