''Sugar plum fairy
Sugar plum fairy''
I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well, I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords
I saw a film today, oh boy
The English army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book
I'd love to turn you on
Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream
(Aaaaah!) (Aaaah!)
I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall
I'd love to turn you on

| treatment_bound (Duluth to Madison) | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 - 14:16 According to history books, there was quite a bit of hype when these guys played live. It looks like security was also extra tight, as each band member had his own personally armed cop!! ![]() | |

| cambuddyf | Posted: Oct 03, 2012 - 12:42 An absolutely unbelievable song. It took "pop" music to a whole new level and still sounds great today. Interestingly enough, believe it was the first song recorded for Pepper (after Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were offered up for singles). | |

Ooh, I really don't think so - my Dad's chi-chi parties were definitely for his straight-laced middle-class mates, so no blow, Joe. They might have had some Lebanese dates on the buffet, though. This album always makes me cringe because of these 'personal issues' (shudder)

There are more important things to spend your time "worrying" about. Everyone doesn't have the same tastes - get over it. The world would be pretty dull if everyone liked the same things. Personally, I have always liked this song, but I don't expect everyone else to.

| ajlept (Athens, GA) | Posted: May 13, 2012 - 21:47 Brought up from the depths of surrealism, no words can describe how this affected the musical psyche when it was released. Still sends shivers down my spine when I hear it again and really listen. I can die now. | |

My Dad used to occasionally hold parties for his sophisto middle-class friends to aid his social climbing and at some point in every party this album would be dug out and all the guys would stand there singing along from the lyrics on the sleeve. It was intensely embarrassing to the callow adolescent I was then, and is still embarrassing. I forever associate this album with a bunch of middle-class teachers singing along to it as if it were a hymn book (shudder). Sounds like your Dad and buddies had a lot of fun. | buddy | Posted: Feb 25, 2012 - 01:10 This was the first song that ever really blew my mind. I was different after it played than just before it hadn't. I bought the LP the day it came out. Must have played it end to end a billion times that week. This song was beautiful, confusing, even scary in an odd kind of way. I lived in Germany 1962-65 and experienced Beatlemania there...I want to hold your hand, yeah yeah yeah... and then here as it hit just when we moved back. At 14 in 1967 I just assumed they'd always be there, the soundtrack of my life. And indeed they always have. It's cliche, but they just don't make them like this anymore. Pretty much haven't since that day I ran home from the record store with the new Beatles album.

Unfortunately, they're up to their ankles in the relegation zone with some tough fixtures ahead. I expected more of them after they ambushed Man U on New Year's Eve, but 1-2-2 isn't going to keep them from, um, zoning out.
