Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name
No one hears his lonely sigh,
There are no blankets where he lies.
In all his deepest dreams the Gypsy flies
with sweet Melissa... mmm...
Again the morning's come,
Again he's on the run,
Sunbeams shining through his hair,
Appearing not to have a care.
Well, pick up your gear and Gypsy roll on, roll on.
Crossroads, will you ever let him go? (Lord, Lord)
Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
Or will his spirit fall away?
But I know that he won't stay without Melissa.
Yes I know that he won't stay without Melissa.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin' fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa... mmm...
Freight train, each car looks the same, all the same.
And no one knows the Gypsy's name
No one hears his lonely sigh,

Will you hide the dead man's ghost,
Or will he lie, beneath the clay,
Or will his spirit fall away?

| kingart (Brooklyn NY) | Posted: Jan 02, 2013 - 14:43 Never a more classic or memorable sound, song or album. It would be a stretch to call Melissa uplifting — the guitar is crying for God's sake — but it is among the highest forms of bittersweet. |

| bachbeet | Posted: Aug 29, 2012 - 22:34 Terrific song from a terrific album. I don't know about anyone else here who was around at that time but I got really upset about hearing of all these deaths of all these rock giants. Just added to the somber mood with the war and Nixon, the assassinations, Kent State, etc. |

| LPCity (Salt Lake City, Utah) | Posted: Jul 29, 2012 - 12:36 Such a great song and as far as college memories go.... My best friend in college was always seriously dating one girl or another, but always breaking up with them also. Then he met Melissa who he was completely crazy about and totally in love with, until he wasn't and, of course, broke up with her. So three of us are sitting around on an afternoon playing our guitars and in walks my best friend with a totally glum look on his face for he is, for this brief moment anyway, without a girlfriend. "Hey, let's play one for Bill". We launch into a great, for us anyway, version of this song. Bill flips us the bird and walks out of the room. We all collapse in laughter at our dear friend's expense. Ahh, college life! |
