Is there a way to play flac on the Music Player Daemon on Debian? I would like to use headless RaspberryPi for this.

RP streams.  Which one minimizes CPU activity?

For a long time, I have been streaming RP at the PC-workstation using the 320 kbps AAC feed through foobar2000 v.1.3.1.   Works great and the quality is overkill for what I am doing as the music normally plays in the background.   (OK, I do crank it up every now and then.

Now RP offers several mp3 streams and a FLAC stream through the website.  (We use the FLAC stream on the HTPC system along with the out of sight, superb slide show.)

Could or rather should I simply use the ultra mp3  or the FLAC stream through the web browser?   Which method minimizes CPU load?

P.S.  This is indeed a First World problem.  With the plethora of first rate choices RP provides based on voluntary contributions,  we are spoiled rotten.

The RP FLAC stream can also be played on many DLNA players.
You need a Squeezebox Server (LMS) running on a PC, NAS or preferably a Raspberry Pi (I use Max2Play).
Install the Radio Paradise plugin.
Install the UPNP/DLNA bridge plugin and your DLNA player will pop up in the server.
Select the RP plugin in your control app and stream FLAC to the selected player, voila.

No worries, take your time. I'm just a thankful listener who would freak out to have RP in FLAC quality {#Notworthy}
(I'm using Volumio on a Raspberry with custom DAC - I will make it work, what ever it takes ;)

Sorry, no. This is not a standard stream, so in MusicBee I also listen to the 320k stream. For the FLAC stream I use the plugin for Squeezebox Server / Logitech Media Server serving players on a PC, a Mac, and several dedicated devices around the house. I also use the Android app.

To make my point clear. Most Hi-Res players are in their early stages and not that advanced. A simple url is what most people will want. So - I hope it's just not up there yet!? Every thing else would just make absolutely no sense to me. {#No}

Thanks for the info earthbased..... Flac  800+  VBR is good enough, we don't really need the cd rate of 1,400 . Many places where we buy music , we download it at 800 - 900  kbps.

This will amount to around 400 megs/hours
. ( average of 850 kbps)  if it's at 16 bits...

Dang, they sure are proud of those things! Ouch. The Finance Director would never sign off on that.

I'm looking for a rack-mount conditioner/protector, Furman is one common brand. I'd even get a used one and replace all the thyristors (?), whatever they are that sacrifice themselves to surges. A handful from Digikey might be $20.

I have a long wish list for the audio/video closet...

  I was talking about the number of gigabyte that will be downloaded if i listen to the Flac stream for 5 hours. I actually have a 60 megs/sec download speed, so I'm not worrying about the stream being fluid, just curious to know how heavy it will be.  If the stream is at 1,400 kbps, you might start to hear some hicups with a 4.5 mb download if someone else is also watching movies or playing a multiplayer game.  We'll see soon enough.

I see what you mean! You're right, our slow speed is fine until someone else wants to stream TV but it can't manage both. I've found with other lossless streams (such as Tidal) that download speed is not always a good indicator of reliability. A fast connection with poor latency can be worse - only way to find out is to try it and see.
I always look for unlimited download contracts from ISPs!

My rural UK 'broadband' ADSL is only 4.5MB, but I can stream 16/44 FLAC from RP, and from Tidal, with no problem.
