The song that made me a Decemberists fan!  Thanks for bringing it back
Totally tired of the Decemberists. Will they go away in January?
Geez, this drags on and on and on....
Please make it stop!

There are so many great vineyards in California. One wine maker who is thinking Green is Jerry Lohr. Check out this url:

I still have a library card from the Salem Public Library (I lived in Keizer for twenty years, but it never had its own library...) So - how's the weather in PDX? I really miss the PNW - all the local music, the bike-friendly streets, the recycling... Is Dirty Martini doing well? They performed a few years ago at the Elko Hot-Air Balloon Festival, and I wrote an article on them that got published in the local newspaper. They were SO awesome...

My mom painted a picture of Multnomah Falls, based on a photo I snapped of it in 1982. The Gorge is always beautiful and treacherous, and I miss Jonathan's at the Oyster Bar...

And that has nothing to do with the Decemberists, but I love this song.  Marley, go pay your fines and become a happy library person again. They love it when people own up to their debts, and chances are, they'll settle... {#Lol}

I like their music, but the singer's voice really annoys me. Its a shame really.

edit: This is kinda overly long...

I actually like this song (and others by The Decemberists) because they are taking this minimalism approach that's becoming so popular and doing it RIGHT.  It's simple, but not overly boring.  It doesn't include annoyingly repetitious Casio keyboard sounds.  It's not so overly sparse and minimalistic that you wonder if they left out one of the sound tracks.  It's really a well done, light, relaxing piece.
when's it gonna end?

For some reason, this doesn't do it for me.

The vocalist is interesting (I happen to agree with the earlier comment about there are too many clay aiken soundalikes / jewel wannabes), the guitar + drum + organ combination reminds me of late 60's early 70's jams (of which I am fond), but I just can't see myself ever needing to hear this again.  Trying to figure out why.  lyrics are boring, maybe?  production doesn't pull the piece together maybe?  The most interesting part for me was the musical bridge.   Hmm.....

Indeed. Pedestrian in the extreme.

Ah, a set about the state I was born and raised in but had to leave after 27 years because people from all over the damn country kept moving there and ruining everything. *Sigh* Maybe one day enough earthquakes, riots, and other generally bad things will occur enough to keep people away and I can go back. In the meantime, I hunker down in the cold of the midwest and enjoy a relatively normal life among more grounded people.

Hm — but that's a really nice geetar.

"I figured I had paid my debt to society
by paying my overdue fines at the Multnomah county library, at the library"

Yeah I hear that!   Fantastic library system though.

I like other material from this band, and do not have a problem with the singer's voice; it seems like a great many people only want to hear safe, "professional" vocalists anymore, (maybe that's who buys those Clay Aiken CD's).  That being stated, this song is ponderous and tiresome (to me).

Music is ok, but those vocals are horrible!
Good song but it could have been over about 6 minutes ago.  Way too long.
California WHINE - please stop whining. It's so boring.

I looked at this song to see that I rated it a 5. A 5?? This song is clearly way lower than that. In fact, it's almost unrateable. So I gave it a 1. This guy's voice is soo annoying (to me). Just thought I'd share that all with you.

Not that any one really cares. I don't even care. I'm just wasting my Sunday evening away listening to a really shitty set.

Bill's getting to be like prime time TV. Not a lot of us out there listening so play all the crap, save the good stuff for Monday afternoon.

Yeah, we're on to you, Bill. Watch your back!

Well, I cared enough to give it a 9. Good stuff.

...this is a long one, isn't it?..
Bed-wetters?
I'm getting the impression I should join some kind of brigade--did anyone get the details?

Okay the geek strikes again.... The band is the Decemberists. The 1825 Russians were know as the Decembrists. The band intetionally called themselves the Decemberists because they figured if they used the actual spelling that people would ask "Don't you mean Decemberists?" Splitting hairs again... Awesome insrpired choice Bill!!!!!!! More Decemberists!!!!!
Awful.

Not their strongest effort, but a likeable tune nonetheless. And I quite like Colin Melloy's voice. It's weird, yes, but not grating to these ears. A better tune is "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" which is also dreamy and slow-ish. Love it.

Darn! I thought that case was closed decades ago with Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
Hey, you forgot Mick Jagger...one of the worst singers to ever make it huge. Don't believe me? Just go have another listen to Ruby Tuesday.
Wow. I really love this band...and this song is one of my favourites. I can see how a voice can really rub someone the wrong way, but The Decemberists float my boat. Thanks to whomever uploaded it.

Well, those boys may not have the silkiest of voices, to put it mildly, but they each have a soul and immense talent. This guy obviously has neither.

Haven't heard much from this album but several songs on their previous one give me the creeps.
...20 minutes later, the song is still boring.

Further proof that lack of singing ability is no barrier to making a song! One that is so bad, it's "badness" increases in direct proportion to its length.

It's called "California Whine" for a reason.

Is it the California kind of sound? Personally I don't hear that myself.

How about "California" by the Beach Boys? THE BEST California song...EVER!
Ugh. Is there a point to this?
Caught 'em at ACL Fest last year...in a word: yawn. Everyone around me conversed more than listened, so I'd call that a majority. Still decently good, but not burning down any houses tonight. And WAYYYY too long without much diversity.

Why bother with a melody? Mind-numbing drone this.
PLAY Joni Mithchell's California next!!!!
Nice!! saw that this tune was in the playlist but didn't think i'd actually ever hear it.... gorgeous
i almost liked it at first, and then it just droned on and on and on... and, in response to an earlier comment asking where else you can hear other songs that go on seemingly forever? try every sucko-barfo pink floyd song out there! *ducking*
Maybe it is the slide guitar that reminds me of other bands...sounds like "Laughing" from David Crosby's first solo album .
Excellent! Love these guys!
Glad to see The Decmeberists finally getting played here. I particularly love the "Youth and Beauty Brigade" slow groove section at the end. Where else can you hear an almost 10 minute long (non jazz or classical) track played on the radio? Thanks R&B, glad you accepted the upload.
