Sure, the Beatles have become the avatars of any and all popular music. Yet, attributing to them (only) the world changes you mentioned falls short of taking societal changes into account that enabled them to take that role in the first place, me thinks.

Oh yeah, i remember! i had such a crush on a boy when i was in 9th grade who went to the private school locally and he played piano and introduced me to all the joe jackson that i could get my hands on. my dad even started stealing my albums/tapes for his commute in the car to and from work.
and you're right - underrated, for sure. such a talented musician.
