Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five are often considered among the "originators" of rock'n'roll by some - though his music is often referred to as "Jump Blues" also.  There are a few of his tunes (from the 1940s) on the playlist - though it does not include "Saturday Night Fish Fry".

I can see this could become a discussion about what is Rock and Roll vs Blues or Gospel or Rhythm and Blues.  It all just morphs a little bit each year.  I never thought of
Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five as being R&R, but "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" is pretty darn close!

This is a pointless, but hopefully fun question.  What is the earliest ROCK song on RP?  I heard a Buddy Holly song this morning and it just got me thinking.  There are songs that rock, going back to Beethoven or even Vivaldi, and some swing songs rock (Just listen to Duke Ellington's 1937 Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, especially the live 1956 version).  But what "Rock and Roll" song came first?  And to the question specifically, what's on Radio Paradise?  No "Rocket 88" by Ike Turner, no Roy Brown's song "Good Rocking Tonight."

Thinking there must be a Little Richard record older than that on RP my music search of him led me, of course, to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Rock and roll. Live it learn it. It's not a mantra. It's a ripple.

Her song "Strange Things Happening Every Day", recorded in 1944 with Sammy Price, Decca's house boogie woogie pianist, showcased her virtuosity as a guitarist and her witty lyrics and delivery. It was the first gospel song to appear on the Billboard magazine Harlem Hit Parade. This 1944 record has been called the first rock and roll record.<14> Tharpe toured throughout the 1940s, backed by various gospel quartets, including the Dixie Hummingbirds.
