I'm thinking about when I was a sailor
Spent my time on the open seas
When we'd stay off the coast of Jamaica
I'd secretly steal ashore
The natives were waiting for
The boy with the lazy soul
To sing with the sailor

[Chorus:]
Vahevala, homeless sailor
Vahevala, homeward sail away
Vahevala, homeless sailor
Vahevala, homeward sail away
Every evening I'd be gone
Back on board by break of dawn

I'm thinking about the nights in Jamaica
Pretty girls dancin' here and there
Stole a keg and now I'm drunk as a sailor
The captain he don't know
Where Billy he done go
But I'm singing with native girls
The songs of a sailor

[Chorus]

Every night in Jamaica I'd sing with the lady
And drink with the men till the morning appear
Healthy sunshine is fresh on my face
As the songs of the night puts the ring in my ear

As the songs of the night puts

The ring in my ear

Hmmn
Back in the day when music was harmonious.
You know they’re are other good songs on this album

You need to spend more time on a boat.
Guilty pleasure from junior year of high school ;-)
I never knew what the words were to this when I was a kid. Now I do.
It sounded to me like  "oh, heave a lot homeward sailor". I thought it was weird that someone would make a song about getting seasick, and making it sound fun at the same time.
One of my favorite bands, although I admit to being more a fan of Loggins  than Messina's . I saw him in Honolulu in the late 70's and he had to really work the audience, who were apparently there to see C&K (Cecilio and Kapono- hope I spelled that correctly).  By the time his set ended they were on their feet.  Always a great band with him - "Live in the Redwoods" - is a great example.
YACHT ROCK!!!!
Another six degrees of Buffalo Springfield band.
Fun to hear them again.
When this came on I laughed, and said "Oh god, my earworm for the next couple of days". And I mean that in a smiling positive way. One can do worse than have this silly song in his head.

One could not escape this song in 1972. Not  a bad thing at the beginning, but wearing after the first 50 times.

Haven't heard it even once since the 50X in 1972... until now. Thankfully.
You know there are a lot of better tunes in this album right ? Or are we on a loop again ?

Play more Loggins and Messina please Nice memory’s
Be still my beating 1970's heart. Delicious musical work. Folk meets a sly jazz riff.
One of the first albums I bought for myself. *sigh*
Listened to this continuously back in the day.  As a sailor it meant a lot!
I saw them in concert when this came out and I was a sailor. Loggins was never as good alone as he was when he was with Messina in my opinion.
COWBELL!
kooky-pleasant and addictive {#Cheers}
Nice blast from the past. Thanks!
Good memories.  Great album.
UGH. Doesn't stand the test of time. The original studio Angry Eyes does, however. The live ~blech~version doesn't count.
{#Daisy} My happy song.
I love the version on 'On Stage'  These guys were really cooking!  Wish I had seen them in their day.

Ah yes, but will we ever hear the 21-minute live version from "On Stage"?
