Doctors have come from distant cities just to see me
Stand over my bed disbelieving what they're seeing
They say I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation
And as far as they see they can offer no explanation

Newspapers ask intimate questions want confessions
They reach into my head to steal the glory of my story
They say I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation
And as far as they see they can offer no explanation

I believe Fate smiled and Destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love with patience and with faith
She'll make her way
She'll make her way
She'll make her way

People see me I'm a challenge to your balance
I'm over your heads how I confound you and astound you to know
I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation
And as far as you see you can offer me no explanation

I believe Fate smiled and Destiny
Laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as she came to my mother
Know this child will not suffer
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love with patience and with faith
She'll make her way
She'll make her way
She'll make her way

Well this brightened my day (no sarcasm).

The usual Natalie Merchant songs we hear are the live version of "Because The Night" (way way overplayed) or the downbeat 2000s solo songs.  With the way things are right now I need to be hearing a lot of positive songs.
Lyrics - Makes me tear up
Jenns Guitar - Amazing

Solid - Rare 10 from me.
Such lovely lyrics.

I am totally physically infatuated with Nat—her plushy body and full lips and come-hither eyes and luxuriant mane.
I'm a sucker for sensual, senuous earth mothers.

Man, keep your creepy stalkerishness to yourself.
i like the live version better but the album is decent

This is a very meaningful song to many people who grew up with special
needs and their caretakers. The song views these people as "wonders,"
with doctors having no explanation for their condition, but seeing the
work of God in the creation.

"I've met a lot of people through
this song, and they've told me that they've taken it on as their song,
that it describes them," Merchant said. "It describes their strengths in
spite of what others would see as deficiencies."

I always hear weird stories about her. I heard she wanted to have Micheal stipes kids. Another I heard was she was being swarmed by insects at a concert at the woodlands in houston and she commented to the crowd which responded by throwing some cans of Off on stage to which she gave a lecture on deet..

I dislike Natalie. I've never been able to appreciate her song-writing, her vocal delivery, or anything else, really, for that matter.

ditto.  having had to put up with her ego shenanigans in person didn't help my opinion.

Love Natalie's Tiger Lily Album - but she kind of killed one of my favorite bands by leaving.

Found online - Natalie Merchant's "Wonder" is often mistaken as a song about vanity or arrogance. In actuality, it is a song about a woman with a physical disability and a refreshing attitude: differences in her physical body are not handicaps or deformities, they are wonders, a term that implies magic, awe and beauty. The woman makes her way through life "gifted with love, with patience, and with faith." The song has become an anthem for many people with disabilities, but Merchant has insisted that, even though her inspiration for the song was a wonderful woman with a physical handicap, the song can be about anyone. For this reason, the video portrays women (of different ages, shapes and sizes) singing the lyrics. Hope that helps.
So does anyone understand what this song is all about? It sounds like one big ego trip, but I'm sure there's a lot more to it than that.
About 10 or so years ago, a DJ on a local radio station said this about Natalie Merchant: "A nice song you could sing in front of your mom" 93.7 the Edge (Minneapolis)

...i agree; i'm torn between a six and a seven for that reason...
Has anyone gone to the shows in New York City this week? How was it? Should I try to get in?
