The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

Chorus
Don't try to live your life in one day
Don't go speed your time away
Don't try to live your life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

The old man said to me
Said you can't change the world single-handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery
Pretend the water is champagne
And fill my glass again and again
While the wolves are gathering round your door
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

I tried to live my life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

I bit off more than I can chew
Only so much you can do

Wolves are gathering round my door
Ask them in and invite some more

I tried to live my life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

GOOD TUNE!  It brings back memories.  Thanx RP!
Gosh!  Who would have thought that Howard Jones would be listened to on RP 40 years later?  Nostalgic yes (I confess to buying the Album🙄) but more a bit of fun for me.  Thanks for the memories RP 🙏

My first CD. Little Sony CD player only had one laser scanner and no buffer. Always skipped, still enjoyed it.

Same! I had the Sony D-5 which was one of the first "Discman" players (which eventually stopped working and I traded up for a 5 disc changer). I also bought this CD the same day along with a few others like "Songs From the Big Chair" by Tears for Fears (back when they were "Made In West Germany"!).
Cheesy 80's tune. They have their place.
Wasn't aware that Jack Bauer fought against a bunch of green alien look-alikes.
Once saw HoJo and his set was intro'd by his mom...

The fact that this doesn't happen is exactly why many of us love Radio Paradise.
Excellent!
One of my first impressions of Howard Jones is that he looked like Stan Laurel.

Damn - mine too. Was about to post that!

Great sitcom opening music.

The fake piano and cheesy organ really sink this song. Wow, even the horns are fake. Thankfully I don't remember this from back in the day.

And WTF is this supposed to mean?:

HoJo was never the "greatest" music, and his lyrics were basic fluff.  "I've been waiting for oh-so-long..." is not profound.  And mid-80s digital instruments and production are... sonic saccharine.

While his tunes fall short of "most excellent", I find this track to be Most Likeable.  But a lot of RP listeners seem to PSD.

I'm not sure it's you who gets to decide where anything belongs on RP.

Saw Howard open for Eurythmics at the Greek in Berkeley. Did a hell of a one man show. But  Annie, JJ, and Dave were on fire that night.

How low does an average rating have to be for a song to get booted from the playlist? I hope this becomes a candidate for such a thing very soon. Makes me feel like I am back in the 80's.......not a good thing.

Love Howard Jones. I feel pretty confident that this is probably not very good, but I reject this truth utterly and still love it.

A 9 for pure nostalgia alone. Love HJ.
Nice to hear some HoJo for us old folks!
I don't know if I could get myself to listen to this if I didn't know it already (it is very much of its time), but it holds a special place in my head and always brings a smile to my lips.
Have always loved the sentiment of this song; read the lyrics before you mark a song down, folks!

"We"?
HJ: the poster child for why I hate 80s music BUT, can't help but turn it up when I hear it.

He was in the right place at the right time with the right sound.  He was a lot more popular than most remember.  I saw him live at the Tower Theater in Philly.  I recall it was a good show.

Glad to hear it.....and looking forward to catching it again in a few years.
So mainstream but I like it still! Still have the vinyl. I probably haven't put it on the turntable since the album came out! Might just have to revisit this one.
Always enjoyed HJ- very talented fellow. I also saw him live (by himself and a VERY large bank of synthesizers). For you folks knocking the 80's I just would like to point out at this very same concert I saw Joe Strummer, then Mick Jones+ Joe Strummer with Big Audio Dynamite in the background, followed by some great reggae from Aswad. Great music, regardless of the years. I will however admit this particular tune (never the best to begin with) has not aged well. Personally, I would rather hear than almost this anything from the Seattle - Grunge era of the 90's ... But since the 90's crap seem so good to so many on RP- I suggest we throw some Britney and Justin in for fun! (guess we all have our generations)
Dear Lord. Truly horrible.
This is the first time I have ever heard this song and I hope it's that last. Well okay, maybe not the last but if this is indeed from the 80's it only reminds me that I did the right thing by listening mainly to the Dead during that decade.
absolutely horrible.
I just got the best of HJ, I was surprised of other songs I never heard before, this is not his best song and I have to agree it is a little annoying
Whats next the Barney Song? I thought I was listening to some kids TV soundtrack, telle-tubbies, I don't know, just ...please, please....make it go away! (pimp)
A truly irritating keyboard riff....
When this album was new I was embarassingly into Howard Jones. This stuff has not aged well. I can't really enjoy listening to it anymore.

Does not belong on your fine station.
A near-perfect example of why the 80s were a truly horrid decade.
More energetic fun from HJ. Play \"New Song.\"
