Well I woke up in mid-afternoon 'cause that's when it all hurts the most
I dream I never know anyone at the party and I'm always the host
If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts
You can never escape, you can only move south down the coast

Well, I am an idiot walking a tightrope of fortune and fame
I am an acrobat, swinging trapezes through circles of flame
If you've never stared off into the distance, then your life is a shame
And though I'll never forget your face, sometimes I can't remember my name

Hey, Mrs. Potter don't cry
Hey, Mrs. Potter I know why
But hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?

Well there's a piece of Maria in every song that I sing
And the price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings
And there is always one last light to turn out and one last bell to ring
And the last one out of the circus has to lock up everything

Or the elephants will get out and forget to remember what you said
Oh, and the ghosts of the tilt-a-whirl will linger inside of your head
Oh, and the ferris wheel junkies will spin them forever instead
When I see you, a blanket of stars covers me in bed

Hey, Mrs. Potter don't go
I said hey, Mrs. Potter I don't know
But hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?

All the blue light reflections that color my mind when I sleep
And the lovesick rejections that accompany the company I keep
All the razor perceptions that cut just a little too deep
Hey, I can bleed as well as anyone, but I need someone to help me sleep

Oh, so I throw my hand into the air and it swims in the beams
It's just a brief interruption of the swirling dust sparkle jet stream
Well, I know I don't know you and you're probably not what you seem
Oh, but I'd sure like to find out, so why don't you climb down off that movie screen

Hey, Mrs. Potter don't turn
Hey, Mrs. Potter I burn for you
Hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?

When the last king of Hollywood shatters his glass on the floor
And orders another, well I wonder what he did that for
That's when I know that I have to get out 'cause I have been there before
So I gave up my seat at the bar and I head for the door

We drove out to the desert, just to lie down beneath this bowl of stars
We stand up in the Palace like it's the last of the great pioneer town bars
Oh, we shout out these songs against the clang of electric guitars
Well, you can see a million miles tonight but you can't get very far
Oh, you can see a million miles tonight but you can't get very far.

Hey, Mrs. Potter I won't touch
And hey, Mrs. Potter it's not much
But hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?

Hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?
Hey, Mrs. Potter won't you talk to me?

'''Well that was very nice, thank you very much.'''

Just awful. What a way to cap off the 90's.
One of the most annoying bands ever. Not good then, not good now.
Off to listen to KCRW while this song ends.

{#Naughty} {#Tongue} {#Roflol}  My reaction lies somewhere within the spectrum to the left. Call it mildly scandalized tittering.

I like CC's "Sullivan Street" but most of the time Mr. Duritz doesn't do it for me.

I was down our local deer park earlier today, and whilst I was vegging out by the lake I was counting the crows (and ducks and geese and anchovies and orang-utans), and that was far more interesting than the songs that come out of this bunch. A nailed-on Ho-Hum from the laid-back Nottingham jury.
So funny ... was just going through rating music earlier today and came across this one. One of their better ones, still not sure if I like this album more than their first ("August..") but it's pretty damn close most days.

OOOOH yes! spent my whole morning listening to one song!

Does anyone else find it ironic that someone who goes by the moniker "raga" finds a song too long?

People love to slam Counting Crows, but this is actually a pretty good song, good lyrics. So there.

Yeah ... this is my favorite Counting Crows song and you don't hear it much. Nice drive and groove. I included it in my Random Lost Gems compilation.

Yeah, this doesn't get it.
OK, I admit, I am a sucker for Adam's whiny emotions.

You got it.

It's really saying something when you're disappointed that a song isn't "the one from Journey".

I disagree with everything in this comment.

Don't like a lot of their music, but I really like this one. The opening piano is just great. I also think Miami by them is pretty good...in my opinion.

Every time I hear this I wonder why they wrote a song about Colonel Potter's wife.

Love the song though.

When I saw the Crows in concert, this was my "I really hope they do this one" song. They did.

"The price of a memory is the memory of the sorrow it brings."

Deal with it, haters.

Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of the Journey song 'Just The Same Way'.

His voice alone makes me want to punch something (preferably him). He's also a jerk? I like him.
Dear lord the Counting Crows suck.
This music conjures up images of preppy frat boys. yuk!
I liked these guys more until one day I suddenly though "Geez, that sounds like the Stones." But I still like 'em pretty good!

The one Counting Crows song I like. I haven't paid attention to the lyrics yet, but like the melody and feel.
As soon as I find out that a singer is a jerk (as Duritz is) it ruins his music for me... not that I loved it anyway.
I'm feeling good and this song just got bumped up. 7 -> 8
Yeah, the Dylan Crows.
While I love this song, and think every single verse is a poetic gem... what the hell is this song about?
A fantastic song, the lyrics, melody; all rolls together. I listen to it about once a month just to be reminded why I really this band.
Quietly visualizing a murder of crows.
I always think of the Bodeans when I hear the guitar on this song.
I've always wonder...who is Maria and what is her connection to Duritz?
Almost Dylan-esque at times *edit* didn't realize i stole moaks thunder*
Some folks don't like Adam's voice, but it is penetrating and distinct. Like Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon and Neil Young, these guys have that special intonation which makes the listener stop and ... well, listen. Good cut, good group and great album.

This is kind of Dylanesque in its oblique rambling story...great song.

this time I disagree
I was reading some of the comments to Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down" earlier today and noticed most negative comments were about Neil's whiny voice. I feel the exact same way about Adam Duritz's voice, yet I love Neil's. And now I'm wondering just why the Hell that is...

I never really cared for this band, Mr. Jones got played way too much back in the early 90's, but after hearing this song I have kind of mellowed on them a bit. Some of his vocals are a bit too affected at times, but this is pretty enjoyable.
Yuk! Hyper-cheesy!!
The crows live are awesome. Adam gives it 200%. Hard to judge a live band from studio.
Helps me whistle while I work.
This is the best Counting Crows song I have ever heard! I mean that. Still torture to listen to, though.
Nothing wrong with it except it just won't end. Prefer other CC songs to this one; especially Perfect Blue Buildings that never seems to get played.
What a great groove that it. Loving it...(gave it a 7)

Very good tune from an excellent band. Poetic and often sublime. Not for everyone as is evident from these comments but the rating is decent.

I don't mind most of CC, including this song, really like "A Long December" and caught a pretty good live show this summer, but this comment made me LOL.
I'm not a Crows-hater, but one thing I tend to dislike about lead singers that don't play an instrument is that they tend not to know when to shut the #*&% up, and let the music play.

not here! I'm with you guys, think they are great and think they'll be seen as great in the future, theres is a sound that lasts, I think anyway
Well, at least they made a few records and then went away quietly. No harm, no foul. I hope they invested their money well.

Agreed. Incredibly long-winded, wordy, truly in love with the sound of his own voice and with his pseudo-profound lyrics. GOD I can't stand this song! This is an utterly unnecessary band.

Their UK record company actually tried to do that for UK radio. The band responded by splitting the track in two having the first half as track one and the second half as track two of the radio promo. Needless to say it wasn't played much and was, I think, never officially released as a single. mrrmt wrote:

Well, I don't know Adam from Eve, but I do like this song. Heard it first last summer while digging at an archaeological site in Italy, and now this second time I could follow the lyrics. Good spirit of memories and something that apparently never quite happened, carried along by a good tune.

Right on, dig the writing here. You're right about Adam though, I was lucky and caught one of his really good ones a few years back! Good stuff!
I got to catch the complete opposite, he was pissed because he didn't think the audience was respectful of the opening act and stated we were a bunch of A##$%# and played a very short set with no encore

Crows may deserve some of the flame out comments but I've always enjoyed this long song with quirky imagery and tangled lyrics. "There's a piece of Maria in every song I sing..." is a great line. Good stuff.

i know it is long but it is one of his greatest lyrical songs. listen to the words. the life philosophy is just bursting out of him in a way that can't be contained. It is stream of consciousness song writing. To have cut it shorter would have changed what he is trying to express. I love this song.
