Tonight we ride, right or wrong
Tonight we sail, on a radio song
Rescue me, should I go down
If I stay too long in trouble town
Oh, yeah

You wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do

Now and again I get the feeling
Well, if I don't win, I'm a-gonna break even
Rescue me, should I go wrong
If I dig too deep, if I stay too long
Oh, yeah

You wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do

I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants
You be the girl at the high school dance
Run with me wherever I go
And just play dumb, whatever you know
Oh, yeah

You wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do

You wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do

Great song and Album!
Tom made such great sing-along party-jam songs, didn't he? Such fun! So glad I saw him play in '85!
You know, I want to dislike TP's music -- it's really simple stuff -- but damn if he doesn't "get me" every time.    Simple, yes, but rollicking blues stuff with catchy lyrics and guitar licks!  Gotta give this an 8.
B4 anyone says it, yes, I know I can hit psd! But, it isn't  T. Petty's birthday so, wonder what gives, with all the TP tunes the past few days? Bill? Care to pipe in?

I compare this stuff to his early music, 70's and early 80's, and I find that there is no comparison.  To me this isn't bubble gum, but elevator music for a fat orthodontist in his late 50's cruising on the Harley he just bought.  Yawn.

Agree 1000%.   Too much Tom Petty, too much Talking Heads.   Everything else fantastic so it is what it is.

Thanks for letting us know!
Go Mike Campbell!
You Rock Me, Isabeau
I believe it was producer Rick Rubin who challenged Tom to do better than "You Rock Me". Reminds me of how Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like A Lady" was originally "Crusin' with the Ladies" and their producer Desmond Child said that was just awful. They've got to do better (no one had really talked so bluntly to them before.) One of the band members sheepishly said "well, when we're joking around we say "dude looks like a lady." And Child was like "ok, now we're getting somewhere!"

Any other songs you've done with Tom that have stories that would interest your fans?

Mike
: I don't know if this story is out there, but "You Wreck Me" was a track we cut, and he wrote the whole song. I remember when he called me, he said, "I've got some words to this song," I said, "What do you call it," and he said "It's called You Rock Me." I remember thinking, I don't know, it sounds kind of ordinary, but we really like the track and everything. We went ahead and cut it and we lived with that for a while, but we kept saying, "You Rock Me..."

Then one day he came back and goes, "I've got it, I'll just change it to 'You Wreck Me,'" and the whole thing took on a new meaning. It's an example of one little word changing the whole thing.

the intro of pearl jam - comatose sounds like this song. I know this song is earlier so probably pearl jam got the influence from tom petty.

Intro not dissimilar to Good Times - Jimmy Barnes/INXS - either?

TP and this song epitomize America.

So long man.
RIP Tom, Thanks for the memories. {#Notworthy}

A definite favourite of Bill and Rebecca. {#Wink} 21 solo tracks and 58 with the Heartbreakers {#Yes}

You forgot to mention the cliche lyrics.

every song melds together in this one of the best ever albums
Fundamentally awesome guitar sounds coming out of their hands.

That's why they're not known as Benmont Tench and the Heartbreakers.

Same fundamental chord structure (just much much more slowly) as the song by U2 called "Desire"...  D, A, E...

everybody in my mushrooming multitude of churches be dancing buck ass naked all across the world like bowlegged gypsy muleskinners...  we love this song...  it tweaks our nipples...  love sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll...
Ugh... the most overestimated songwriter of boredom and naive melody lines.
Classic Petty. Time well spent.

yeah, funny how a better Petty tune rates a decent.

Petty is not a favorite of mine. His voice and music in general is a droning sound to me.

So a 5 is as far as I can push it.

Those are some of my favorite lyrics in pop music, though I couldn't say why.  Just turn it up and enjoy.
