Winter's setting in again
And it feels like the end is near
Sense a sense I ain't had in long
Watching the seconds passing by

Come January, I swear this world
Won't be the one that we once lived on
Took an oath for a promise sworn and broken
All that's gone away

On Monday morning you can't wake up
Still dreaming of what could have been
Something good has gone and left you
It's another tear, one more denial

Come January, I swear this world
Won't be the one that we once lived on
Took an oath, another a promise sworn and broken
All that's gone, all that's gone before you've changed

When Monday morning you don't wake up
Still dreaming of what could have been
Something good has gone and left you
It's another tear, one more denial

Come January, I swear this world
Won't be the one that we once lived on
Took an oath, another promise sworn and broken
All that's gone, all that's gone before
All that's gone before
All that's gone before, It's changed

GREAT TUNE!  Scary album cover.

CBD and some Tiger Balm.
RIP Mark Lanegan
This is a very very sad day in my life.
57 years old, taken too soon
Most excellent (8)
Whoa! Nice
I would bloody dig this if I heard it anywhere in the 25 years it's been out!!!
Song 8 RP 10
Mellow hasn't been too mellow lately. This melody and hard guitar riff gives me a headache.
Whenever this song begins I always get so excited for the organ solo. I just want to live in that moment forever
This sounds a lot like the tone, meter and style of Robbie Williams a decade ago. Just lacks the extra edge and more skilled musicians. But nice all the same 7/10.
Oh yes .. more Three Dog Night please ... shambala rock on Reminds me of "Out in the Country" by Three Dog Night Posted
Remarkably like a Robbie Williams tone to this vocal
reminds me of Collective Soul
Flipped to the RP tab when this came on. Bumped it to a 9, this is the music I need in my despair.

Always love a bit of "Trees". This one really cooks along. I get the Pachobel reference but the chords aren't quite the same.

Greatings from Bavaria to all the listeners outside. Stay safe!
It would be great to hear some Mark Lanegan solo material on RP.

That's exactly what I thought. And guess what? While I'm typing this, Bill is playing ... The Kinks!
This song sounds a lot like the Kinks.
I thought this was Blur, who often sound like the Kinks.  Until I checked...
Glorious song from a glorious album by a glorious band in a glorious decade!

Yeah, that ersatz-baroque solo was what perked my ears up. Creative and cool. The rest of the song doesn't quite hold up to the standard it creates, though it singlehandedly (or two-handedly) motivated me to look into these guys more.

ersatz Dennis DeYoung? ersatz,  Dennis DeYoung? er, Dennis DeYoung?
I love the organ(?) solo in the middle. Totally makes the song for me.

Are you a pessimist? That's one definition for a propensity for emphasizing that a glass is half empty. For me, the melody and organ solo fills up that glass.

I believe that is Benmont Tench (Heartbreakers) playing the keyboard solo....
NICE hooks, love the harpsichord break..or whatever that was

No, it doesn't look like he was "comparing this guy to Leslie West"; he was comparing this song to a song which was recorded by Mountain.  By the way, Jack Bruce and Peter Brown wrote "Theme For An Imaginary Western", not Leslie West, and this song has a different chord progression than that one, but it does sound similar in some spots.

If I know my Mountain, it sounds a bit like "Tired Angels" off the Nantucket Sleighride album - in parts.
Such a great melodic hook.

Great tune, greater memories

It's been twenty years. *happy sigh*
The guitar would sound even better if less muddied by effects, but, wow, the lyrics are pretty incisive, and cut deeper than expected...
Anyone kinda think this sounds like Mountain?
what a great little solo on the keys
Weird. Just as I am reading the comments for this song, and agreeing that it both sounded Kinks/Ray Davies-ish. "Tired of Waiting for you" comes on...

Love RP.
Nice!
This is actually a happy song for me, weirdly enough. I quit smoking about this time of year 19 years ago while this song was in heavy rotation on the radio. When I'd hear the line "come January this world won't be the one we once lived on," I'd think "Yes! I won't want cigarettes anymore." Soon after, I started spending my cigarette money on used CDs. It's a much better habit.

Could have sworn I heard Jeff Healey there for a moment.... RIP Jeff from a 30-year admirer!

back then - I was just a "baby" (concerning music taste)

I saw them with Soul Asylum and (gasp) the Spin Doctors in 1992? You'll have to forgive me for my bad taste. I was only 15 years old.

Is there any way that I can rate this song an 11?

Screaming Trees Biography

"Even on first appearance, Screaming Trees had more sense of history, and a load more talent, than the welter of grunge-styled bands formed in the Seattle/Washington area in the mid-1980s. And it's a promise they at last fulfilled with their 1996 masterpiece, Dust... a perfect synthesis of their many influences, with splashes of Byrds and Hendrix-style guitar, and use of sitars and tablas, produced with unerring clarity by George Drakoulias. Lanegan was on top vocal form, the lyrics (sin, redemption, cold turkey) perfect in their restraint; the guitars and instrumentation wild."

I disagree. Dust is a marvellous album, which somehow, needs some attention to realise it. However I agree that 'Nearly Lost You' is their most powerful track ever. Pay some respect to Dust, is worth it!

Awesome. ST doesn't get much play, but I love it when it RP shows them a little love.

Nah, I think the Numb Inversion version of Something About Today is pretty lame. And some of the stuff off of their first couple of albums was amateurish. Love the Trees, and I've got EVERYTHING available.

One of the best rock albums of the 90's. I'm going to break it out when I get home and listen to it all the way through.

I would rather hear this so-called "weak" song rather than something overplayed on commercial radio years ago. This is what I love about RP.....deep cuts.

Sounds like the theme to The OC?
The trees were a great band, those that diss this, just don't know the band. Saw them live twice, once in a tiny bar opening for Drivin' N Cryin' and once in Tiajuana.
I saw mark singing for queens of the stone age a few years ago. he was so coked out it was painful! Ive never been able to think about him the same way since.

RP has a fantastic tendency to close out my week perfectly. It's Friday afternoon, 4:10 pm EST, and I'm almost ready to leave, and this song caps it off perfectly.
My husband hipped me to these guys. Another good thing he did for me. Great tune.
This is another from the "what if" category. I would have loved to see Screaming Trees stay together longer. What if they continued to develop as a band? Great song.
Pretty nice.

The liner notes to the album call it nothing more sophisticated than an electric piano.
