I'm of two minds about this cover.  The arrangement and Santana's guitarwork are pretty damn good, IMO.  But the lead vocals?  

They leave me cold.  Really cold, like the passion of it all - she's not there.

I've long been one of Santana's (the guitarist not the band, since the fabulous post-1973 band had about a dozen interchangeable lineups) biggest fans. But this cut is not one for the highlight playlists. Only the Zombies (or the original writer) were enriched by this cover. It was on my pod but I cut it from the team. I seem to remember reading that Carlos himself was not glad to be roped by the producer into cutting this and similar tracks from that era.

I'm a die-hard Santana fan - but not of anything from this time of this song onward. This song is atrocious, with some of the most obnoxious "guitar hero" playing ever recorded. It's almost unbelievable that this is the same guy who recorded "Song of the Wind". Today's Santana is what you get when money is the only thing he's playing for.

It's on his "Simplicity" album with a lot of other covers (and his minor hit, "Working on my Tan").  I rate it a "6". It's ok. He's got better.

It's an awkward album as much of it sounds like theatre acting and technical vocal exercises. For example, he does an interesting version of "Summer in the City" but it has little passion and none of the spontaneity of the original.

Agreed, except I only gave this an 8 instead of 9.  It's a fantastic cover, but I'm frustrated that Bill doesn't play more of the Zombies, so my protest at not playing the Zombies original is 9 —> 8

Carlos had his guitar licks and they were awfully good ... but his percussionists were what really drove the band.  Perhaps that's why their songs are still played 35 years after the fact.

This oft-covered song is wonderful. This version seems mostly like an opportunity for ol' Devadip to play some solos. Of the covers, I think I'd take the one by Vanilla Fudge.
