Are we really happy
With this lonely game we play?
Looking for the right words to say
Searching but not finding
Understanding anywhere
We're lost in this masquerade

Both afraid to say we're just to far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
Each time I see your eyes
And no matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
Why we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
Every time I see your eyes
And no matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
That we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

We could just start over but it's oh, so hard to do
When you're lost in a masquerade

How did a superb guitarist and singer "butcher" this song with a different interpretation? I actually had to pause Radio Paradise and find Benson's version to make sure I wasn't wrong. I wasn't.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. 🤣
Well I made myself chuckle on this one. I can name that tune in one note! (and be glad it's coming on)
Beautiful song with so many beautiful versions. My fave remains Helen Reddy's version. Yes - really!
GODLIKE!!!  ICONIC!!!

Thanks Bill so much for adding this one. This has got to be one of the greatest songs of all time. A little known, little played gem by, who would have guessed it, Leon Russell. Benson butchered it. This one is the version that stands the test of time. :nodhead:

I always felt that "Carney" was Leon Russell's Sgt Pepper
