If I needed you
Would you come to me
Would you come to me
And ease my pain
If you needed me
I would come to you
I'd swim the seas
For to ease your pain

In the night forlorn
Ah, the morning's born
And the morning shines
With the lights of love
You will miss sunrise
If you close your eyes
That would break
My heart in two

Lady's with me now
Since I showed her how
To lay her lilly hand in mine
Loop and Lil agree
She's a sight to see
And a treasure for
The poor to find

Apart from having an amazing voice, Lyle is the only guy I know that can pull off wearing cowboy boots with an Armani suit.  Well done sir, well done indeed...

I believe this was written by Townes van Zandt, not Don Gibson. Great song in any case.

Don Gibson was a great songwriter as well.

Something about Lyle Lovett's voice can bring me to tears instantly.  His, and Patty Griffin's voices just resonate for me.  This is a very good song. {#Yes}

That is a duet we would all love to hear Ann.
isnt it funny all the leftist comments here, slamming reagan as a warmonger etc,, what do we have now??  a potus suffering from dementia,, a baby sniffing pedophile, who has lead us into war with russia and the possibility of ww3... dream on communists and marxists,
This is a Townes Van Zandt song… and it is fantastic. I prefer it by TVZ live with a guitar but this is lovely too
The album is a double disc of covers. The title refers to a Guy Clark song that he never recorded. Whole album is a gem, not a bum in the lot. If you like this side of Mr. Lovett, you'll love it.

I always thought the Emmy Lou Harris version of this song could never be surpassed. Still true, maybe, but boy does this version come close.

I know what you mean.  His voice is moving, and this is a great example of his sensitivity and grace.

I will always wonder why he and Julia Roberts split up.  They seemed such an offbeat couple, and good for each other.

And 11 years later, my dear friend I never met, I'm stoked to hear to hear this on the RP airwaves. Call it an 8 off the bat, lovely and well performed; Long Live RP!!
just a funny note. Julia Roberts sings this song to a child in the movie Stepmom.
This is the right tune for the moment I am in. Lyle is strumming the strings of my heart.
Lyle is one of my favorite live performances.
Not normally a Lyle Lovett fan, but his voice here is amazing....
""If I Needed You" is a single written by Townes Van Zandt, most famously performed by American country music artists Emmylou Harris and Don Williams."

I thought so too, and I remember an album of his saying Willie Nelson liked it so much he did a version too...

One of my favorite Lyle Songs, thanks for the afternoon sing-a-long
Nice Version!  One of my favorite songs covered by the late Townes VanZandt.  Thanks Bill!

But did we really need it?
Lifeless version
Lyle Lovett and Patsy Cline are as close to country as I can get.
We need more Lyle Lovett.

this is a terrific album - he covers Texas song writers.
Some really beautiful stuff - and bears.
