Well, I'm a'gonna raise a fuss
I'm a'gonna raise a holler

I've been working all summer
Just to try and earn a dollar

Well went to the boss
(Said girl for a date??)
The boss said "No dice, son, you gotta work late"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a'gonna do
There ain't no cure for the summertime blues

Well my mom and poppa told me
"Son you gotta earn some money
If you wanna use the car
To go ridin' next Sunday"

Well I didn't go to work
I told the boss I was sick
He said "You can't use the car
'cause you didn't work a lick"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a'gonna do
There ain't no cure for the summertime blues

Gonna take two weeks
Gonna have a fine vacation

Gonna take my problem
To the United Nations

Well I went to my congressman
He said, quote: "I'd like to help you son
But you're too young to vote"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a'gonna do
There ain't no cure for the summertime blues

Great version of the Mose Allison song. Anyone ever seen Mose Allison? I have.

Mose Allison wrote Summertime Blues that was covered on this album.  Summertime Blues was originally done by Eddie Cochran.
This is the best recording by the who of this song.
FANTASTIC set BillG!!
When played at 11 this is an 11

The whole album is full tilt, although I haven't heard the new releases with added material. Very loud and raucous. My neighbors heard a lot of "Magic Bus" from this album when I was high school...
at the top of their game

Haha!!! I did see them live but it was after Moon passed.  Too bad!

Blue Cheer's version is far from the original.  Eddie Cochran co-wrote it and released the first recording of this song.  The Beach Boys covered it several years after that.   If the year of birth shown in your profile is accurate, you ought to know that.
Heard Blue Cheer practicing/playing on a pier in NYC...We, however,
were in Hoboken...;-)

I bought this album in 1971, while I was in High School. I have always thought this is their best album!!!
no one can deny this logic:

The drum playing require three arms
Keith M was only drummer
Therefore, Keith had three arms
It was well hidden

Pete might have snuck on an overdub or two.

I don't think so....what you are hearing is John Entwistle's wonderful Bass playing filling in where Pete could not!

No, it was just Pete playing his ass off.

Live At Leeds should be in every bodies collection.

Hmmm.. The Ramones were a lot of things -- many of them good -- but world-class masters of their instruments? Uh, no.

This just doesn't add anything at all to the original Blue Cheer version. The music is polished to the point of being a candidate for grocery store muzak, and the vocals just don't have the energy and edge of the original. On the other hand, I'm still getting around to finding a turntable to retrieve my original, so it was nice to hear any cover!  {#Curtain}

What ever happened to those guys anyway?

Dickie Peterson died earlier this year, so where he is is anybody's guess.

They sure did rock.

I like THE WHO (who does not?) and "TOMMY" is gorgeous, but I never understood the fuzz about
"Summertime Blues" or "Live at Leeds!

Did you...?

PS
By the way: Where are "THE THE" with their truely incredible albums and single songs? Try "The Whisperers" and tell me if you have ever - EVER-EVER!!!! - heard a better song. Forget it - I am like you. Not a 19-year old fan...

No matter who plays it, it is a "guy" song.  {#Motor}
This is one kick ass live album if there ever was any!

This version is one of my all time favorites. Just watched most of the movie documentary, Woodstock, directors cut, and the Who played this tune, but not nearly as well as Live at Leeds, don't think the guitar solo was done at all.

Flamin Groovies, The Clash, The Who ...

This has been a rockin Tuesday morning, and I love it.

A fiery cut from one of the best live albums ever. Still has the power to make you want to go downtown and throw rocks through the windows of corporate criminals.

Oh, and folks, Blue Cheer wasn't the original artist. Eddie Cochran wrote it with his manager. His bass player lives in Wilmington NC and works as a house painter. You can occasionally hear him playing the tune in Carolina Beach bars.

This sounds so much like The Ramones it's actually scary....

Wore the grooves out on this LP at age 16. Adolescent rock revelation enlightenment obsession.
Very amusing.  Love the replies to my post!  I actually logged on to give it a "1"...but alas, I already had.

No accounting for taste, I guess ... this is one of the highlight tracks from what many people consider to be the best live rock album ever made.

You haven't been listening for long enough, guy ;-). 3 from the Nottingham jury as this isn't a patch on the original.

You should check out, The Who - the Live at Isle of Wight DVD...sounds not the best in the world but a great dvd
Wish I were there... 'Isle og Weigh' DVD is a closer step.
Was this in Caddyshack? Maybe the "caddy day at the pool" scene?

No argument, except may Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal as a contender.
in what way do the who qualify as a "trio?" i realize that right now they are technically a "duo," but, oh never mind. i'm goin2 bed. dmax wrote:
Were there ever a trio with such balls? Maybe early ZZ Top, but they didn't have such a great run as the 'Ooo.
Just gotta love the Ox and that Rotosound sound!

I love The Who, but I agree completely about Devo. They were way ahead of their time. Their name was short for De-Evolution and you see evidence of that everywhere and it's getting dumber all the time. Neanderthal behavior in every aspect of our lives!
Was this, or another version of it in "Caddy Shack", or "Meatballs", or sumpin like that?!?!?

Arguably so. The video of the Isle of Wight concert shows me that, at the time, the Who were one of the greatest rock bands on the planet. Check it out if you can.

The Who never sounded better, especially because for the first time John Entwistle's extraordinary bass playing was done justice on a recording.

A 10.Even if the whole song except the drum track was wiped,it'd STILL be a 10.

Granted it's not Pinball Wizard; I'm Free or anything from Tommy. Not Magic Bus; Boris the Spider; Baba O'Reilly(sic); etcetcetcetc but it's JUST AS GOOD. IT'S THE WHO (wouldja feel different if they were The Whom? Would that kick it up a notch 4u?)
Love this song. Those of you with negative comments, I say this with love, Philistines!

Wow, a bit lackluster after Vivaldi
Vivaldi --> Live at Leads?!? If that's not eclectic programing than nothing is.

Yes. Very, Very Good.
congrats to the Who on their new disc. It compares quite comparably to their earlier work, against all expectations...
would LOVE to hear Janis's version of "Summertime" next!!
I get the Summer theme of Vivaldi---Who and I like both pieces of music, a whole lot, but it was a bit jarring to go from Classical Strings to Pete Townshend hitting the strings

You've got to be kidding, this cover rocks as good as the original.
Oh hells yeah! I love the Whose.
If you're going to have a set with a summer theme, which Bill appears to be doing here, this one is a MUST! What a great counterpoint to all the isn't- summer-great-let's-just-chill tunes out there. This one is about rebellion. And it cooks!
Hell yes!
ROCK AND ROLL!!

I recently did a mix of covers of this song, including the Eddie Cochran original. The Who\'s version is great, but, surprisingly (especially since I am not a country fan) Alan Jackson\'s cover is also excellent. The once-popular version by Blue Cheer has not aged well. This song has almost as many covers as White Christmas.
Ah, yes, must be summer. Always wondered who the guy is with the deep bass voice. Sounds like some bosses I\'ve had. :D
