You and me we were the pretenders
We let it all slip away
In the end what you don't surrender
Well, the world just strips away

Girl ain't no kindness in the face of strangers
Ain't gonna find no miracles here
Well, you can wait on your blessings my darlin'
But I got a deal for you right here

I ain't looking for prayers or pity
I ain't coming round searchin' for a crutch
I just want someone to talk to
And a little of that human touch
Just a little of that human touch

Ain't no mercy on the streets of this town
Ain't no bread from heavenly skies
Ain't nobody drawin' wine from this blood
It's just you and me tonight

Tell me in a world without pity
Do you think what I'm askin's too much
I just want something to hold on to
And a little of that human touch
Just a little of that human touch

Oh girl, that feelin' of safety you prize
Well, it comes with a hard, hard price
You can't shut off the risk and the pain
Without losin' the love that remains
We're all riders on this train

So you been broken and you been hurt
Show me somebody who ain't
Yeah, I know I ain't nobody's bargain
But hell, a little touch up
And a little paint....

You might need somethin' to hold on to
When all the answers they don't amount for much
Somebody that you can just talk to
And a little of that human touch

Baby, in a world without pity
Do you think what I'm askin's too much?
I just want to feel you in my arms
And share a little of that human touch

Share a little of that human touch
Feel a little of that human touch (and you)
Feel a little of that human touch

Share a little of that human touch (I want)
Feel a little of that human touch
Give you a little of that human touch (and you)
Give me a little of that human touch

Give me a little of that human touch

He should have stopped after his third album.

Very good song but too lengthy. It'd be better if half as long, imo.

Better start sterilizing the ice-pick buddy...

This guy's catalogue is quite varied, but that doesn't make it good to me. I liked his stuff when I was 5 years old (seriously - especially the "Born in the USA" tape - my first!), and after that didn't really care for his music all that much. Appearantly he donates lots o' dough around Jersey, though, and that's pretty cool. Just as long as he's not singing while he does so.

so true! An amazing artist! love this track!
It's okay, but I'm really scratching my head at all the effusive praise. "Classic!" "An instant 10!" (shrug)
SUPERB.

I don't get the lyrics, I don't get the "everyman" quality, I just don't get why he's called the "boss". The little Springsteen music I've listened to has never made me think I was missing anything.
Oh, you are missing something. What's not to like? I can understand puzzlement over the "boss" label, but how can you not understand these lyrics? And an "everyman" quality is what most artists -- of any genre -- strive to reach. This man has it in spades.

Although I've seen Bruce in concert years ago, I was never really into his earlier stuff. Not really sure why as I'm starting to like his later music...but I am.
Bruce evolves over the years. I saw him on "The River" tour: best concert I ever saw- out of over 120. Saw him again on "The Rising" different but still amazing. This stuff is way underrated.

Yeah, but that's not saying much then. I give Bruce more credit. Streets of Philiadelphia, good. Human Touch, crap. Give me his older stuff, and you can keep most of his newer stuff.
I agree completely.

A Classic! A beautiful Classic!
Isn't this one of his best? Awesome crescendo, depth and melody. A 10.
How about no Bruce at all? Please? eww this sucks... (Quits iTunes)
how about some more vintage Bruce? anything off of Born to Run is better than this schlock.
Go back to NJ and sulk.

hey, send me a cd and i'll get back to you!
No, this doesn't do it for me. When the music is this lacking, it matters little what the message is.
One of my few "10"s. Early April 05: Upgraded to 11 (Except for the drums. They're back at 5.)
A first for me on RP: Bruce juice.

I saw Bruce at the L.A. sports arena in 1988 with my, then, girlfriend, who hailed from NYC and was a huge Springsteen fan. It was easily the best concert I've been to. I can imagine a great performer, perhaps, equalling Bruce. But better? No chance. And my girlfriend said his early shows, from the 70's, were even better! I think the whole Springsteen thing can be summed up in the way he reaches the average, everyday working Joe; the guy who's struggling from paycheck to paycheck, hoping that, one day, he's going to find all the promises of the good life. Springsteen expresses that ordeal so perfectly. He nails it squarely. And he delivers it, especially in concert, with an honest, intense passion that is unsurpassed.
Like you said, it isn't easy to imagine a greater perfomer than Bruce Springsteen, in rockmusic and I can't think of a better way to describe the sort of person he did it for, through the years.
crap :P
This would be a great song if the singer could sing or the music had any kind of tune or energy.
Turn it up.
luv the man and his music, but this was not one of his best :(
AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH! (quits iTunes)

I have NEVER gotten the Bruce thing. I don't hate the man, but I just don't get it. Is his music really THAT good? I've had some friends who have always said to me, oh you have to listen to his lyrics, you'll love his lyrics. Sorry, but if I can't get into the tune, then what's the point of listening to the lyrics? I might as well read poetry then, eh?

Why have lyrics if they are irrelevant? I think it has to be the whole package. If a song has lyrics, they matter. As for Bruce, the man exudes integrity and that's what people are tapping into. That, along with the energy.
Quite a good song from an album that I would not rank among his best.

Ditto... I always get this mental picture of Sylvester Stallone behind a microphone. I don't get the lyrics, I don't get the "everyman" quality, I just don't get why he's called the "boss". The little Springsteen music I've listened to has never made me think I was missing anything.
make the bad man stop.
More Springsteen PLEASE
Love This Song. Thanks RP

Not bad actually, and I'm not a big Bruce fan (World Apart, in particular, which I pee on from a great height)Would much rather hear this.
AWESOME, one of my favorites from Bruce!!!!! More, more!

Excellent unobtrusive background music - it's lack of distinguishing characteristics and over-refinment make it great for doctors office waiting rooms.
True, maybe not his best, but still one of my favorites. The video is most excellent, as well. And, the E Street Band nails this live!!! More Bruce, please!!!!!

No doubt. I saw Bruce on his most recent tour. I had the worst seats possible; about 5 rows from the very back. Didn't matter, though. Still felt the energy, power and passion of Bruce and the E Street Band. Best concert I'll probably ever see.

I agree, the critics have always loved Bruce. But I'm a bit confused by the "more personal than musical" statement. What do you mean? Are you saying that he appeals to people, because he's likeable? Not sure I'd buy that, since most people neither know Springsteen, nor know all that much about him. Personally, I just think he's one of the best live performers out there.
Has there been any inclination to discuss the notion of middle aged rock? Clearly, this was Bruce\'s foray into that genre. As for middle aged me, I dig this song!
You\'ve got to be kidding -- Springsteen is a critic\'s darling. It always seemed to me that his appeal was more personal than musical.
Good tune. I\'ve always thought Bruce Springsteen was underrated by \"the critics\" because of his mass popularity.
