I'm sitting here with a grin and tears. Love Billie Hliday - she reminds me of a simpler time that will never come again. Yes, I escape to the past because I can't afford, nor do I want, any of those high-zoot toys people use to pretend their lives are okey-dokey.  Music works for me. And Billie Holiday is the best mood-booster of all.

{#Clap}        I first heard this one when I was about 3 years old, courtesy of my father.  I was raised on classic jazz & big band music. That was circa 1950, folks. Still great, even thought she was technically 'before my time', her singing is timeless - she gives real meaning to the term "torch singer" in my book.  Without our forerunners there might not be any rock n' roll, eh? Of course, I did listen to a lot more than just jazz, but it sure was great as a steppin' off place for my ears & head. When my dad was in his teens he played piano, and he had a band. He used to tell me about driving to gigs in his model T.  Unfortunately there was no piano in our house when I grew up, but I did play the alto sax for many years.    Keep it up,  Bill !!!

From what I understand, it was considered a big deal for her as a black female vocalist of the time because it was only when the studio took your career seriously enough that they granted you the orchestral accompaniment. It's all about the strings.

I care but I wasn't yet born so can't offer first hand experience but based on the time period, accompaniment was usually by "big" band and that's sound you'd hear. Sort of nightcluby. Wish I'd been there to appreciate it.

Also agree- the pre 41 stuff is far superior, even if the sound quality isn't as good due to the technical limitations of that time. The Decca Sessions were recorded from 1944 to 1950.

There are some very easily probabilities. They simply don't like jazz. They are annoyed at the tone that Billie puts out. Just because someone is significant doesn't mean you have to like them. I particularly don't like to listen to Bach. I still know he was pretty significant to musical history.

I've been waiting forever for RP to play a Billie Holiday song besides that "Speak Low" remix. Thank you, Bill for playing this. Billie Holiday, in my opinion, is the greatest singer ever. Her voice and her emotion is incomparable. To me all music begins and ends with her.
