I Agree.

Don't resist. You could hurt yourself!
Great version but nothing can beat Benny Goodman with Gene Krupa live at Carnegie Hall.
A solid 10 in my book. This is an amazing composition and a faithful, respectful recreation.
If you haven’t seen, “Swing Kids,” do so! This song makes me wished I’d learned those crazy dance moves! Wow! What a tune! Thanks, RP!!
Ooh, those horns! BLARP!BLARP! A proper full- bodied big band with all the instruments playing their parts with gusto. A sound which has almost died off live in these days of techno, though to his credit Jools Holland runs a big-ish band.

Disclaimer: I played horn in school band, and though I was rubbish I loved the experience :)
GREAT!!!  It would be extremely difficult to be able to screw this tune up!  ....with or without vocals!

KILLER!!!  Actually composed by Louis Prima, with vocals and made famous by Benny Goodman! There are great videos on You Tube of Prima & Goodman with their orchestras playing this tune!   ...And, a great version was used in the dance/ fight scene in the movie 1941 with John Belushi!

YES!!   And you forgot the Los Straitjackets version, which is also  GREAT!!
just have to dance !!! this is such a mind boost !!  love it !
Nice...
I just love floor toms!! Prima version, Goodman version  & Los Straitjackets version!!  You Tube has great versions of Goodman, Prima & their orchestras!

one of my faves! Thx for playing. Play "In the Mood" too, if you don't mind.

Thanks for this!  How about playing the 1939 Benny Goodman concert - that would be Gene Krupa on drums, Lionel Hampton on xylophone, Benny on clarinet, well, all the great ones.

Love this rendering by James Horner, but this idea gives me goosebumps of joy.

PS. love the clarinet part.

Ah hell. 10
Used so often in the 1990s and 2000s in TV advertisements for dentures and life insurance. {#Snooty}

Wish we had a way of preventing important cultural art from being used in advertisements... that's just not cool.
When i get low...
The beginnings of rock n roll, no guitars and better dancers....!

Benny Goodman's charts & a pretty faithful rendition -- but a new recording.

IMO this was probably recorded just for the movie with the tempo to match the choreography.  This is a Jazz Standard so I imagine there are tons of recordings out there.
Makes me want to cut a rug!

This is an excellent and heartfelt cover of a piece of musical history. Would I like Bill to also play the original? Absolutely! But this version is no reason to get into a snit over the lack.
YES!!!!  And we should remember this is a Louis Prima song!

And the Swing Kids movie is pretty good, too - and scarily relevant today.

Love this drumming especially after watching the movie Whiplash.

I have that one on vinyl, part of my father's collection. I swiped it and brought it to college back in the 1980's and my friends loved it.
Possibly the best song of the big band era, certainly up there with the top 5. Benny Goodman... the real deal. And Krupa!! swing, baby, swing.

even faster

1936 this was written. There are a few rap songs, some rock tunes that will be this good after that many years, but the thing about swing is it wants you to dance...that's all, just dance. The world is in a great big mess, the economy is just starting to recover a bit, and there's stuff going on in Europe that seems unsettling, but come dance and spend some cash and feel good...Don't think about the mess in Europe, don't fret about the Fascists. Prohibition has been repealed...Time to party...let's dance!

Eight years later, you won't like what you see.   Dance faster!
Sad, just read about his death in the wiki link.
And it even has some Cowbell! Great stuff. 10

Had to switch this one up to a 10.  The gods were definitely rocking out at Valhalla when they first put this one on.  Also, nice and faithful to the original but with all the advantages of modern recording, though the drums are not quite as rockin' as in the original.

I remember something of a debate with my college roommate about the longevity of music. We were listening to some Beethoven and he questioned whether anyone would still be listening to "today's" music in 100 years. I opined that people would still be listening to Beatles songs then, just the first thing that popped into my head. He snorted like it was the stupidest thing he'd ever heard.

It's a bet that can't be settled in our lifetimes, but I'm sure I'm right. That's the thing about music. There are infinite ways to put it together and there will always be timeless pieces being composed. They may not sound anything alike, but creativity certainly did not cease to exist with the onset of the 20th century, or the 21st.
Go Daddy-O!!!
Love this shit.
This was my fathers favorite song.  He would put on Benny Goodman's album and the whole family would "get a move on".  It was a gas.

If you haven't seen Swing Kids you should. What a fantastic sound and amazing American export!

Do I remember correctly... It seems that in an episode of "X Files", Scully and Mulder were trapped in a time warp; passengers on a ghost ocean-faring luxury liner, back in a time which may have been contemporary to this song.  It was a dark and foggy night and the ship was slowly disintegrating.  My memory fails as to how, but eventually other passengers appeared.  And the plot twisted to make it possible for Scully and Mulder to dance to this song.  Do you remember? Or is it just wishful thinking?

They weren't dancing to this song; they were being chased around the ship by Nazis while a song very inspired by this one was playing in the background.  Mulder had gone through a time-warp in the Bermuda Triangle.
this is the sound of happiness...
a pure mood booster
As the highest I can rate this is 10, *sigh*
what does that say about all of the lesser songs I've rated "10" over the years?

I'm thinking Jim Carrey in "The Mask"...

If that doesn't get your toes a'tappin  nothing will.  A solid 9 from me

Wild drumming I can imagine the bobby soxers being thrown in the air and having a wild time, hot dancing all around
Good thing there isn't an apartment below me, I tend to heal-tap (as opposed to toe-tap), and my calves are tired after 'drumming' through this song! :-)
Chair dancin'.
Well, THAT is a seque. From Ben Harper to this.

Agreed, DrLex. Some listeners clearly do not comprehend the range of what "eclectic" means. Personally, I "dig" this tune...

Worst part about a DCI show here in Normal, Illinois on the beautiful campus of Illinois State University: The competition was halted because of lightening. Sent the rest of the "shows" into stuffy old Horton Field House.

Best part:  Listening to the Blue Devils playing this in the cavernous gymnasium!
