I forbid you maidens all that wear gold in your hair
To travel to Carterhaugh for young Tam Lin is there

None that go by Carterhaugh but they leave him a pledge
Either their mantles of green or else their maidenhead

Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to Carterhaugh as fast as go can she

She'd not pulled a double rose, a rose but only two
When up then came young Tam Lin, says "Lady, pull no more"

"And why come you to Carterhaugh without command from me?"
"I'll come and go", young Janet said, "and ask no leave of thee"

Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to her father as fast as go can she

Well, up then spoke her father dear and he spoke meek and mild
"Oh, and alas, Janet," he said, "I think you go with child"

"Well, if that be so," Janet said, "myself shall bear the blame
There's not a knight in all your hall shall get the baby's name"

For if my love were an earthly knight as he is an elfin grey
I'd not change my own true love for any knight you have"

Janet tied her kirtle green a bit above her knee
And she's gone to Carterhaugh as fast as go can she

"Oh, tell to me, Tam Lin," she said, "why came you here to dwell?"
"The Queen of Faeries caught me when from my horse I fell

And at the end of seven years she pays a tithe to Hell
I so fair and full of flesh and feared it be myself

But tonight is Hallowe'en and the faerie folk ride
Those that would their true love win at Miles Cross they must bide

First let past the horses black and then let past the brown
Quickly run to the white steed and pull the rider down

For I'll ride on the white steed, the nearest to the town
For I was an earthly knight, they give me that renown

Oh, they will turn me in your arms to a newt or a snake
But hold me tight and fear not, I am your baby's father

And they will turn me in your arms into a lion bold
But hold me tight and fear not and you will love your child

And they will turn me in your arms into a naked knight
But cloak me in your mantle and keep me out of sight"

In the middle of the night she heard the bridle ring
She heeded what he did say and young Tam Lin did win

Then up spoke the Faerie Queen, an angry queen was she
"Woe betide her ill-fought face, an ill death may she die"

"Oh, had I known, Tam Lin," she said, "what this night I did see
I'd have looked him in the eyes and turned him to a tree"

I can totally hear in this song how they got the nick-name "the British Jefferson Airplane," with the fuzzy guitar and powerful female vocalist...but this also has a decidedly distinctive Medieval Tales atmosphere about it...from an interesting era where story-telling across the tracks of entire albums was cool, and people could pay attention... This is a good one, mind you; puts me in the mood for TrespassNursery Cryme, and Foxtrot...
I was born about six centuries too late!
Well, I can say I've heard it at least once

It's not just Far out. It's Fairport!!
And a nice transition from the Strawbs, with whom Sandy Denny also sang.
Not sure how this is Haloweeny - but it is pretty bad.

Had a lovely moment in the coffeeshop when these songs came on:

"Season of the Witch" (I knew this was gonna be played here close to Halloween)
Witchwood
Rhiannon
Tam Lin

They all went well together —-English Folk and English people singing about witches and fairies.
I heard a Jethro Tull song the other day that I really liked called "Witches Promise" that might be good for next year.
This does make a good Halloween tune.

Must we wait until Hallowe'en to hear Tam Lin again, Bill? Please ignore the heathen and unwashed grumbling below, and keep this sublime bit of balladry in rotation.
I agree! This is an amazing version of an ancient song, one that reaches deep into a past too many people have NO CLUE about.
My favorite Fairport Convention / Sandy Denny song! Now that special effects have progressed as far as they have, somebody needs to make another Tam Lin movie.
This is the song that never ends. It just on and on my friends.
It is great to hear this again. Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny couldn't be better... More from this album please... Crazy man michael is another classic

Ditto. But: it's precisely this "heathen and unwashed grumbling below" what gives the song its magic.

One of the worst songs ever. Where did I put my Ren Fair garb? Oh ya, next to my "water pipe" collection.
Oh yeah, you're just so cool. What sort of crappy music do you like so I can make a snotty, simplistic, sweeping generalization myself?

Medieval troubador sounding. Outstanding

Tam Lin arr. for Fairport Convention by Dave Swarbrick Good info on this song here: https://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/sandy.denny/songs/tamlin.html (The words are different from the original (Child) version but this is a very close approximation of the song as performed by Sandy Denny.) Hey Beezle, good call. Maybe the need for those "horns" will gradually just wear away. What a fine band, unknown to far too many people. Saw Richard Thompson in concert a few years ago. What a player. I had hoped he might play some sort of version of this, but without Sandy Denny I suppose it just might not be his cup of tea. A good reason. Glad her "voice" lives on.
when will this song end? it's really repetitive...
If you don't have this CD in your library, you should.
One of the two most classic of classic-rock renditions of a Child ballad (see Child ballads!!). The two giants of the 1970s rock rediscovery of Child ballads (with the root progenitors being Joan Baez and Judy Collins) were Fairport and Steeleye Span. I cannot praise this song loudly enough, except that the loud, passionate, high-energy renditions I heard Fairport give in concert are even better than this recorded version, for my money. I would give almost anything to relive Fairport concerts. They transported me way beyond our galaxy. The two most exciting songs of the Child-ballad revival were this one and Matty Groves. If you went around the rock-music hallway performers at a sci-fi convention, they would probably agree with that assessment. :) :D ;)
Great band, great album, great song. \'Nuff said.
